Hello,

I am 4.5 months post-partum and exclusively breastfeeding. I think I may have just gotten my period...is this normal? I just assumed it wouldn't return until she started solids at 6 months. We just traveled overseas 2 days ago so maybe my system is a little off...not sure. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks! Actually, it was really light yesterday so I was expecting to wake up to a heavier flow but there's nothing...so maybe it wasn't my period?? The baby has been sleeping in long stretches the last 4 nights so something could have been triggered...not sure

I spotted at month 1 post partum and had a full blown heavy period at months 2 and 3 so far. Yippee. I'm coming up on 4 months now.

It's normal. I got mine 4 months after birth for my first - and I didn't start solids until 8 months. For my second, I didn't start my period until 8 months.

Normal. I breastfed my son for 18 months and started my period around 7....everyone is different. It didn't effect our nursing.

That isn't uncommon. My period started 3 weeks after I had my first, 4 weeks after my second, and I breastfed exclusively. I was pretty surprised, but my doctor said that it happens!

yep. normal. exclusively breastfed my first daughter, it came back when she was around 3 months. breastfed my second daughter, it didn't come back at all...i got pregnant again when she was 11 months but didn't have it the whole 11 months even after she started on baby foods.
i'm exclusively BF my 3rd and it still hasn't come back (she's 7 1/2 months).
everyone's body is different, but it's normal.

Certainly you could be one of those unlucky women who get it back early. Chances are it will be irregular for a few months but if you're not using birth control now is the time to start. I didn't personally get mine back for 17 months but I had friends who got theirs as early as 6 weeks even with full-time breastfeeding.

As you have read, everyone is different. I didn't get my period until I was done nursing, but that is obviously not the case all the time. Watch out, you can get pregnant too!

Yes it's normal to have your period and it's normal not to have one too. With my first I didn't have one for at least 6-8 months and with my second I started having them at 6 weeks and had them regularly the whole time I breastfed which was over a year. I just had my 3rd baby and I'm hoping I won't get it early this time but regardless, it's normal either way.

Is your daughter either sleeping through the night or going a long time between nursings at least once a day? That could trigger it. I exclusively breastfed for 7 months and my period came back at 8 months postpartum.

It's sort of all over the board when women start menstruating while breastfeeding. Doesn't sound abnormal.

My period came back while nursing both of my children, but really different both times. I know with my daughter it came back slowly and my first periods were light and got heavier over the course of several months. With my son, it held off longer, but when it came back it was heavy.

Hi R.,
Every woman is different, & yes you can get you period (& pregnant) while breast feeding. I had one period 2 months after my first daughter was born then low and behold I was pregnant!! I had my period after the birth of my second daughter as well. So keep this in mind unless your ready for #2.
Have a Merry Christmas!

R.,

This is normal...just because you are breastfeeding doesn't mean you stop having periods. I nursed my babies for a year and got my periods every month.

Yep normal!
As soon as the baby is going longer than 5 hours...you can begin again....My 1st baby didn't get it till I stopped nursing....not a good sleeper. My second slept through the night at 5weeks and I began the monthly time after 3 months!
