Rice Cooker?

We eat a lot of rice, and I usually just start it on the stove and then pop it in the oven. it turns our perfect, and it usually only takes 5-10 minutes to get it started on the stove. I know lots of people that love their rice cookers. Are they really worth it?

I wouldn't mind having something with a timer, but again, is it really worth it? I have limited storage space, and I already have what seems like a million small appliances.

What can I do next?

we have one. My husband is filipino and my MIL will not let us go with out one (along with a rice dispenser), lol! I do not eat rice. When I did, I gained SO much weight. I have stopped eating rice 2 weeks ago and have lost 5 pounds :) I'm just having more veggies instead. But, we do use it daily for my husband and kids. The one we have doubles as a crock pot. It also has a timer. I really do love it and it's super easy to use and clean.

We have a very basic one. I really like it, we use it a few times a week. We eat a brown rice which takes forever on the stove so it's nice to just start the rice cooker and walk away, then get the rest of dinner going. We also eat jasmine rice and I find it comes out better in the cooker than on the stove.

More than anything, it lets me forget about it and not worry about when/if the rice is done.

Well I married a Filipino so a rice pot is a standard piece of equipment around here, like the toaster, or blender.
Put the water and rice in and you're done. No need to heat up the oven or turn on the stove, nothing to do at all but wait, and it's perfect every time. It doesn't get much easier or better than that!

I've had a rice cooker twice, and it's never been worth it to me. The rice doesn't come out any better and it really doesn't save enough time to justify the counter space. I cook quite a bit of jasmine and brown rice, and it's just as easy to let the water boil, throw the rice in, stir once, move it to the back burner on low and leave it. Perfect rice every time.

Minute Rice comes out perfect. If storage is an issue, I would pass.

Meh... if you had the space I would say give it a try. They aren't expensive.
I have the space. And I was given one as a gift. We don't eat rice that frequently (once a week or so, not daily) and like you, it doesn't take the long. I make it on the stove and it only takes a minute to wash the pot. No special storage or cleaning required.

I used the rice cooker once. When I volunteered to help provide a large quantity for a function at church. I haven't used it since.

I would say skip it, personally.

We eat a lot of rice as well. I have storage space but can't see the reason for getting one for myself.

I use Minute Rice. Bring water with butter and sometimes add veggie soup mix or use tomato juice .. Bring to boil, add rice, turn stovetop off and it's done when we are ready.

My stovetop is flat white glass top ( Kitchen Aid) and when you turn the unit off, it stays warm for a while so its not like shutting off all heat as soon as I add rice.

If you eat alot of it, get one! Zoji makes the best. I don't like the Costco one because the warm cycle is not as good.

I don't use mine all the time anymore because I don't eat rice like when I was growing up. To this day my parents have a pot of rice in a cooker at all times, it gets cooked at night for dinner and then enough for the next day if anyone wants to eat it, then it's cooked again at night. In a good cooker, it should be good warm for 24 hours or more. Three days was our max, at that point the rice was taken out and made into fried rice or tossed.

It sounds like you have a system worked out for your rice already and limited storage.... so, no, a rice cooker is pretty redundant if you can make rice ok otherwise (and you said yours is perfect! so don't fix what isn't broken!).

my husband is a rice fanatic and came into our relationship with a rice cooker. he recently said it's a waste of space (since he was at training without the cooker and figured out other ways to get it just right; we also have limited storage). it will probably get the boot soon...

i saw that someone said theirs doubles as a crock pot... that's about the only way i would encourage anyone to get one, if it could serve double-duty.

We love ours. We eat a lot of Jasmine rice. I just put 2 cups of rice, 2.5 cups I'd water, push down the lever, and 30 mins later we have perfectly cooked rice. I think it is worth it. I just have the basic one, I don't think you need to spend more when the rice turns out the same either way.

We use our rice cooker several times a week, and it's one of the most helpful items in our kitchen. As long as I get the proportion of water to grain correct, it comes out perfectly and doesn't stick/burn like on the stove. Also, we use it to cook items besides rice; you can cook any grain in it (just make sure to get the amount of water right). I've made barley, quinoa, millet, brown rice, etc. So I would vote yes, try it out.

totally worth it. Especially if you eat alot of rice. we also use ours for Quinoa because we eat gluten free. Fill it with rice and water, crank the timer and forget about it. You never have to check it or worry about the heat being too high or low and clean up is so easy. Ours is about 8-10" in circumference so it doesn't take up much space. We throw it in the lazy susan. It also actually fits in our crock pot

BTW - I never would have bought one, my mom gave it to us cuz she never used it. Now I couldn't live without it. I also use it to steam veggies. Ours is a very inexpensive Black and Decker steamer.

Here in Hawaii, mostly all homes, have a rice cooker. It is a STAPLE here. In fact if someone does not have a rice cooker... it is seen as pretty weird.
It is just as important to have as a vacuum. It is a mandatory piece of kitchen appliance.
Rice Cookers, are GREAT.
It is SUPER simple.
It cooks perfectly.
And is very easy.
Even my kids, can make rice using it.
It is not complicated at all.
A rice cooker... does NOT need a "timer."
It just turns off automatically, when it is done.
Rice Cookers in Hawaii are in the kitchen on the counter everyday. Because, it is used, EVERY single day.
So many stores here, sell it.

You can also cook MANY things in it. The box it comes in will have a manual and recipes/instructions for cooking many other things in it.
I have cooked Japanese rice in it, Basmati rice, Jasmine rice, and brown rice in it. It comes out perfectly. EACH time.
But, if you put too much water in it, the rice will turn out, mushy.
