Hi all! My almost 7 month old started rolling over in his crib when I put him down to sleep! It took me an hour and forty minutes last night to get him to go to sleep because every few minutes I would go check on him and he'd be on his belly playing!!! Any suggestions? Thanks!

What can I do next?

My children were doing the same thing at about this age. I had talked to the doctor about it and she said that eventually they would fall asleep. You just have to wait it out, easier said then done I know! Good luck!

My 8-month-old son also does this. We put him to bed wide awake at 7:30 each night and he rolls around until he falls asleep. I used to go in and roll him back to his back but his doctor said once they start rolling you only need to put them down on their back but you don't need to keep on rolling them back to their back.

Hi, When they start rolling over it is such a great time for them- the world is a whole new place! I don't know that I would worry about him playing after you have layed him down to sleep- as long as he is happy he should be fine. Plus he will learn to put himself to sleep this way. My daughter wouldn't sleep on her back after she figured out how to roll over (very early) so no matter what I did she would be on her belly in the morning anyway. If you are concerned you could always turn him over after he falls asleep.
Hope this helps- have fun with tummy time!! It is so good for them.

Hi Louise-
Looks like you already have some good advice. If he is not crying and fussing, just let him play until he falls asleep on his own.

leave him unless he is really crying. by you going into his room every few minutes you are teaching him that he knows you will come back if he makes noise. you should start by laying him down to sleep and say i love you good night and leave room immediately and wait until 5- 10 minutes to return only if he is crying not just whimpering. he will eventually fall asleep on his own. does he use a pacificer? my son is almost 9 months and i put him to bed and give him his favorite luvy that he sleeps with cover him up with blanket and turn mobile on. he knows this means nap time or bed time routine. he sometimes will turn over sit up and play or talk to himself nad i don't go back in unless he is crying and he lost his binky and give it rigt back to him and leave again spending no time in room more than i have too. at first i was going in every few minutes b/c he would cry non stop but after a few nights of same routine he eventually got the hint and is great now. he will wake up and play in crib sometimes before i want to get up and i leave him there talking and playing with himself for a good 20 minutes until he starts to fuss and wants to eat. well i hope soem of this helped and sorry for rambling on. now that is rolling over in crib he probably won;t sleep on his abck much but at this satge it is ok.

I had the same problem with my second child at an even younger age...i tried everything even the pillow that suppose to keep them on their back. I talked to my doctor and he said not to worry that if they can get on their tummy's that easily on their own then its ok.

good luck

When my children started rolling over, i just let them do whatever, then once asleep, i'd put them back on their back. I had no problems, i just make sure there's no blankets or anything to bury their face in.

enjoy the babe.

Hello!
If your baby can roll over then there is no need to keep flipping him in his sleep. My son slept on his belly all the time and still does now and he's 11mths. They say that as long as they can roll then we shouldn't worry about them sleeping on their bellies. Maybe you should mention it to your pedi. if it would make you feel better. I'm pretty sure he/she will tell you the same thing.

Oh, video montiors come in very handy.

Good luck!

If he isn't fussing, I would just let him be and see if he falls asleep on his own. It may be that you have to push his bedtime back a little because he may not be quite tired enough to go to sleep. We found we had to do that with my son and now he falls asleep almost instantly. hope this helps!

It's ok for him to sleep on his stomach now, if he is able to roll himself there.

Don't worry about it! If he is doing it on his own, it is the right time. He will be fine. Good luck and may your husband be safe!

Hi Louise,

Unless he is upset that he is on his stomach, leave him alone!! It will take him forever to go to sleep if you keep going in there. I asked my Pediatrician about the same habit when my daughter started it, and she said that if they are able to turn over, they can sleep on their stomachs. (But still lay him on his back when you put him down at night).

Good Luck!

I fhe's capable of rolling over on his own, I wouldn't worry about it. The only thing you'd be able to do is what you've been doing. Going in and rolling him over every few mins. No fun for him or you! Neither of you will be able to get any rest this way. As long as you don't have anything in the crib he could hurt himself on, he should be just fine. Seriously, what else can you do but what you've been doing. At 7 months, I think he'll be fine in his crib alone. If you are really that concerned about it, I'd speak with your your son's doctor. But really, there isn't anything you can do once they learn to roll back and forth on their own.
Good luck!

My pediatrician told me that once they can roll over on their own, they are fine to sleep on their belly (but still always put them to sleep on their back). My daughter did the same thing around 5 or 6 months old. It is nerve wracking, but you get used to it. My daughter to this day still sleeps on her stomach.

What's wrong with him rolling over in his crib? Are you worried about Sids? Understandable, but my daughter did this, like a lot of babies, and she's fine. My opinion is that if he's stronger enought to roll over, he's stronger enough to lift his head to prevent suffication. Talk to your Pediatrician and see what they say. I don't think there's too much you can do. Also, as hard as it may be, your son had to learn to fall asleep on his own. Even if it takes letting him cry it out. Not going to lie, I hated it and still do, my daughter's almost 17 mths now and still does it. I'm lucky, my Hubby consoled me while we listened to her cry, but you may have to just dig deep for the strength to do it yourself. In the end, it will be soooo much better for Chandler and yourself. Try the Supernanny book, she seems to have some really great ideas on teaching children to self-soothe, like falling asleep on their own. Good luck Hon. I'm saying a prayer for your Husband, I hope he stays safe.

Once my son could roll over, I let him sleep that way. It made for a better night sleep, and once they can put themselves in that position, the risk of sids goes down.

Hi Louise,
Many babies once they start rolling over love to get themselves into the tummy position for going to sleep. If he is content, I would wait and see if he falls asleep on his own by being on his belly.

well my kids slept on their belly's early- it wa the only way they did sleep. Knowing tha tmy kids are fine, I would encourage you to let him play and he will get tired and put him slef to sleep. He is trying all this tuff on for size and it is exciting. I would keep his door open adn chek on him every few minutes if it makes you feel better. This is one of the many hurdles!!!!

Once babies can roll by themselves, it's okay for them to sleep on their tummies. You're in a good habit of putting him down on his back, but his preferences will start to show as his little personality emerges. Sounds like a jolly guy! Now, just try to listen from OUTSIDE the door and count your blessings that he's playing & not crying!

I had the same issue. He eventually just wore himself out and fell asleep. For awhitle he preferred to sleep on his stomach. So I gave up trying to constantly flipping over to his back.
