My daughter has been sick since Friday with a high fever of 104.3 and it came out all of a sudden. The fever was that high for three days then it broke and she woke up with a rash yesterday morning on her belly and now it is on her back. Our Doc. said it is just a virus and that if she did get a rash that it would be Roseola. Has anyone gone though this before. She isn't eating much but I am giving her alot of fluids. How long will this go on for? I feel so bad for her the Doc. said there is nothing else I can do.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for all the info. She is doing much BETTER. Almost back to her normal self. It is very scary to go through that. She is 14 months old and thank god she has never been sick prior to this. So it was hard to see her go though it. Thanks again everyone!!

My son got roseola (also known as fifth's disease) when he was 9 months old. He had a 104º fever and screamed nonstop for 3 days.
The good news is now that she has the rash, the worst of it is over.
Fluids, rest and some tylenol to make her more comfortable is the best you can you for her.

My almost 4 year old daughter had the same thing last May. Unfortunately, your doctor is right. Just give her tylenol for the fever, and the rash will go away on its own. There's really nothing else you can do. I hope this helps you!

Both my boys have had similar issues and I was told the same thing. You could try PediSure drinks, if she does not have any stomach problems. That seems to help with the lack of real food. As long at the fever goes down when you give her Tylenol, she should be fine soon.

My son had the same thing when he was 12 months old. It is very frustrating because there is nothing you can do but treat the symptoms. You have to let the virus run its course. We alternated Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours to keep the fever down. He didn't eat or drink much, just enough to keep him hydrated. Once the fever broke he was back to himself in a couple of days. Just hang in there--keep your daughter hydrated, comfortable and she'll be as good as new in a few days.

Hi T.,
I just wanted to let you know it won't last that long! My son had it when he was an infant. I believe it only lasted for maybe a week! I bought this soap called Grins and Giggles Oatmeal. The oatmeal is supposed to help with irritation! When we thought he might have eczema that is what we used also!! Hope your baby gets better soon!!

My daughter had the same symptoms. After the rash she was much better within 24 hours. It is a very common childhood illness with no treatment. If she still does not feel well after a couple of days I would contact the Dr. again.

My twins have had roseola after they had high fever for a few days. Took me by surprise also. Keep pushing the fluids. My dad is a pediatrician and always tells me that eating while sick isn't the important thing, making sure that the kids are hydrated is most important.

My daughter had this around 8/9 months, high fever for 3 days then the rash. She was so limp with the fever and just wanted to be held. As soon as the rash hit she was feeling better. The rash lasted about 3-4 days. You really can't do anything else. You can put lotion on her to ease the rash but it doesn't do much! Ironically that was the only time she has been sick in her 20 months of life.... I am very lucky! Good luck I know its heartbreaking to see them with the fever then the rash.. it will get better!

My son had the same thing happen a couple of months ago. After the fever was gone he also got a rash. It started out just a few red marks, then all over his belly. We thought he had the chicken pox, but it turned out to be a rash from the fever. I would not worry to much about unless of course it gets worse.

Hi T.! As long as the doctor has seen the rash & has verified that it really is roseola it is true that there is not much you can do. It looks god-awful but it doesn't usually bother them. All 3 of my kids have had it with my youngest breaking out with it while we were on summer vacation out of state!! We gave her benadryl after calling the DR but I'm not sure she really needed it. It seemed to help cut the intensity of the rash. It should have started on the trunk & it will spread out along the face & limbs then go away, it just takes time. Normally it does start with a fever, as well. It certainly sounds as if that is what she has. Good luck!

We just dealt with the roseola virus in November. No big deal, except we discovered our son is prone to having febrile seizures and the high spiking fever that goes along with roseola brought on the seizure. =( The virus is pretty much harmless.
Roseola is not the same as Fifth's Disease.

Have you asked the Dr. about fifth's disease (hand, foot, mouth or Slapped Cheek Syndrome) it is a fever accompanied by a rash on the tummy, back, cheeks etc. My daughter had it twice when she was a toddler.

Hi T.,

My son Ethan just had the Roseola and what you're describing is exactly what we went through. He got sick on a Saturday with back to back fevers of 102. Then on Sunday he wasn't responding to tylenol anymore and we had to throw him in the tub when he got over 103. He was lethargic but still eating pretty good at that point. By Tuesday he was starting to not eat as much and still having the fevers but only morning and night. After daily calls to the pediatrician we insisted he be seen on Wednesday which is when the rash showed up. The Dr told us he'd have no more fevers and he had no more fevers. His appetite was back to normal on Thursday and he's been fine since. It is a strange virus but she will be fine! It is so hard when there's nothing you can do but that really is the case with this thing. Hang in there!

My oldest had this about 12-1/2 years ago. If I remember correctly he had the rash for about a month. It really stunk because I was a single mom and couldn't bring him into daycare so that I could go to work, but was fortunate enough (for me anyhow) that my mom was between jobs and was able to watch him for me.

I don't remember exactly what we did, but I'm sure that if you did a google search for it that there are some great ideas on how to lessen your child's discomfort. Who knows, in that time frame there may be something out there that could help to resolve it in less time.

My son had Roseola when he was about 4 years old. The rash didn't bother him so we just made sure to keep him well hydrated. It is contagious through coughing, sneezing, etc. so he stayed home until the rash went away. I don't think it lasted longer than a few days.

Dear T.,

I'm so sorry for you and your daughter! I was just talking last night with a friend whose daughter just went through the same thing- her fever went up to 105.0! The doctor told her the same thing- "virus" but did not give a specific name- just that it was viral. It was terrible for about a week and then the fever lessoned but she didn't eat much for about 2 weeks and lost some weight. It's so terrible to see little ones go through this. I suggested to my friend to go to Connecticut Center for Health (Middletown) and ask for recommendations for enhancing the immune system.

Hope your daughter feels better soon!

My baby had Roseola when he was about 6 months old. All we did was keep him comfy w/ Tylenol for the fevers. When the rash came out, it was over. It lasted for a few days. It's NOT fun seeing the baby suffer w/ the high fever and it makes for long nights. Pedi. said that he would not get it again.

Did your daughter recently receive the MMR vaccination? My son just received the MMR vaccination and the nurse told me he could react 7 to 10 days after the vaccination. The reaction could be high fever and a rash on his chest and back. Or it could be Fifth Disease. Go to the CDC website for an explaination. It is a common virus for children. It only last for a few days.

My 15 month old had this a couple weeks ago. She had a high fever for a couple days-well I only took it once, it was 103. I didn't treat the fever so I didn't see the need to keep taking it, but she was hot. She acted a little clingier than normal and wasn't particularly interested in eating for a few days. I thought she was teething. So I just nursed her more. We happened to be at a WBV the day the rash showed up and the doc said roseola. By then she was acting normal and not feverish. The rash lasted a couple days and didn't seem to bother her.

T., my daughter when through this about four months ago. The rash will subside in 48 hours and then she will be back to normal...the scariest part was the fever. You cannot diagnose Roseola until the rash appears...but all is better after that. My pedi says that the rash does not itch or anything...Hope all is better soon.

Roseola ~ my 6 year old daughter historically runs a temp of 104 - 105 since she was an infant. She had a fever of 104.9 several years ago and then broke out in a rash all over her body. The doctor said that is natural & it's the body's way of recovering from the inferno within her small body. My daughter was okay within a few days. I took the attention away from the rash & fever and put ALL my attention on her, catering to her EVERY WISH. She LOVED the attention! Good Luck
