Hi!
My son just turned 1 on Sunday. Had his 12 month well baby visit yesterday and tested positive for RSV. Has anyone had any experience with this? I know it's a virus and there is nothing they can give him because it has to run its course but does anyone have suggestions on symptom relief? We've been suctioning his nose often and I've given him Benadryl and we have his vaporizer going constantly. Nothing seems to help. I feel so bad for him because he's so miserable!

A little about me, married, 35 yr old mommy of 1 and loving life with our little man!

What can I do next?

Go to the health food store and get a small bottle of Peppermint oil. Add a drop or two to the humidifier. You can put a little on his chest and forehead, but be aware it will be very strong and you only need a little if you put it on him. However even putting it in the humidifier or a little on his blankets or sheets will help open him up and make it a bit easier to breath. I use it all the time especially with my asthma.

Good luck and hope he is feeling better soon

My 7 month old daughter was hospitalized with RSV 2 weeks ago. THe thing that is helping her most is I went a bought a battery operated nasal aspirator instead of using the bulb. This make the process go much faster and seems to get a lot more stuff out. Also make sure you are using saline drops in the nose when suctioning it helps a lot. If he is still not improving you may take him back and request to try albuterol breathing treatments. My daughter is still on them 3 tiems a day to help open up her airways and make it esier to breath. Hope your little one starts feeling better soon.

for one stop the benedryl. The benedryly is only making him tired it won't help any of his rsv syptoms. I never heard of giving that to them. I have had two kids with it before you just kinda go with the flow. Suck the nose use some steril water like ocean spray for the nose. keep the humidifier running. also you can try sitting in the shower for 15 to 20 mins before sucking his nose or suck it than go in the shower and suck it again. that will help. he will get better with in 4 days.

My daughter had this at around 9 months. We were given a nebulizer machine to take home with us a few days to administer albuteral treatments every 4 hours. It made a tremendous difference. Within about 3 days we no longer needed the treatments and she made a quick recovery.

Ask your doctor if that is an option for you and if they think it might help.

I'm so sorry. My daughter hasn't had RSV but she did just get over another virus. I got these effervescent tablets for the shower. Think, a Vick's vapor steam shower. I let the bathroom get extra steamy, then put the tablet in, then got in the shower with my daughter and let her play while it dissolved. I did it in the morning and then again before bedtime. It seemed to give her a little reprieve.

Long bath with lots of steam trapped in the bathroom. Sleeping with upper body propped up a little. And lots of distraction :) Feel better soon little guy!

Is your Vaporizer hot or cold, sometimes the cool is more soothing and mositurizing, ask your doctor which would be better. If his breathing seems the least bit worse take him back right away to be checked. Good luck.

Years ago, when my youngest was 5 months old (he's almost 21 yrs old now) he contracted RSV. He was hospitalized for 11 days and 8 of those days he was in the PICU (he had stopped breathing in the ER and he ended up in a drug induced paralized state hooked to a ventilator to help treat the RSV). At that time, the nurses would cup their hand and gently tap his whole chest area with their cupped hand, doing so in a circular fashion. They would do this several times a day. This was supposed to help break up the mucus in the lungs and relax the chest muscle. I continued to do this after his release from the hospital. If nothing else it did calm and relax my baby. The pediatrician said he wouldn't get RSV again. You guessed it, the following year at just about the same time he contracted RSV again and was hospitalized for 3 days, with 1 of those days spent in PICU. Even doctors can't predict the future. My number 3 child had RSV at age 31/2 yrs but because he was older he could fight the illness without hospitalization. Hope this helps.

Another thing to do is to put Vick's on his feet then put socks on him at night. I have even put a small amount on the chest to help. I don't suggest putting anything in the vaporizer, I can't remember exactly why but that was a suggestion from our pedictrican.

By putting Vick's on your son's feet will help him to breath better. Everything in your body is connected to your feet. We also do reflexology with our familiy as well. There is book entitled "Reflexology A Basic Guide" by Beryl Crane that is a wonderful book. Hope this helps.
