Hi Moms -
I'd like to host a firefighter-themed birthday party for my almost-five-year-old son. Do you know whether the LA Fire Department allows parties at any of its fire stations? Or whether it is possible to hire a real firefighter to come to the party to show off his gear and teach the kids about fire safety? Assuming those answers are "no," do you know of a good location to host a firefighter party and whether there are any places close by to rent a firetruck for the kids to explore?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I live in the San Gabriel valley. My neighbor had a firefighter bday party for her son last year. She got the truck to stop by her house. I think she just called up our local firehouse and asked if a couple guys could bring the truck over if they aren't doing anything else. As long as they arent on a call I think they are free to do that kinda thing. It was super impressive to the kids. The guys ran the siren and gave kids a look at a few things, then we took a picture in front of it. It was very cute. I think they stayed 10-15 minutes.

You should just call and ask. Or do what my neighbor probably did, which is walk over there with plates of treats, then ask :)

My friend lives in Encino. There is a fire station on Balboa just off of Ventura. She lives about a block away. The main party was at her house, but we all went to the fire station for a tour. The kids got to try on the uniforms and climb on the trucks. They had lots of opps for pictures, too.

You would definitely need to arrange it with the fire department in advance and understand that, if they get called to an emergency, you're obviously not able to go.

The kids all had a really good time. We were probably at the fire house for about half an hour.

LA City fire dept does not do home visits, but from what I understand you can set up a tour of the station. Hope that helps. Sorry I don't know of any fire truck rentals in your area. I believe there is one in Orange County though. Maybe google it.

I think it depends on the individual station.

Call and ask. If they can't do it, many stations do offer tours. I would start the party at the firehouse with the tour, then move to our house or a nearby park.
