My one year old son had about 5 stitches on his face under the eye, about 2 months ago. Ive been using Mederma and sunscreen to help reduce the redness / visibility. But, I havent seen too much improvement. Im not sure if Im just too anxious or if it truly is not healing. Since he got his stitches i have met and talked to several people who also had stitches and they all have vitually no mark. So im wondering how long it might take for the scar to get better or if he is just stuck with it!!

What can I do next?

When my brother was 8 he ran face first into a power box flying a kite... he had to have 45 stitches going from his forehead down to his jaw... I'm can't remember for sure when it went away, but at 24 he doesn't have one anymore...

My daughter was scratched by her brother's fingernail on her cheek 6 months ago. It was nothing severe enough to need stitches, but she still has a mark. All of the doctors we have seen say give it 2 years to go away. I can't imagine it will go completely away, and am just hoping they are correct.

I have experience with stitches.
2 months is too soon.
The more time passes, the more the scar will fade.

I strongly suggest gently applying vitamin E oil or even breaking open the capsules and applying it. It can't hurt anything and vitamin E really does work wonders.

Too months is just too soon to expect the scar to become invisible.

Best wishes.

Use vitamin E!!! Just get the capsules and put the oil on all the time! U should have asked this sooner- you could have been putting this on since it started healing over. But even at 1- chances are it will heal with out a scar, or the scar will fade

As an adult it takes me about 6 months for scars to silver out. As a kid it took about 2 years. Perhaps because the skin was still growing/stretching, and because I'd be less careful as a kid and run into things healing wound/scar first? Thwack, ow! Thwack, ow! Rub, rub, rub. Thwack, ow! Poke, poke, poke. OKAY mum I'll stop poking it. (sneaky poke, sneaky poke).

My daughter had stitches just below her lower lip. The plastic surgeon says it takes 6 months for the scar tissue to finish building. It turns a bit purple at the 3 - 6 month point... and then after that is begins to decrease and fade.

I have had lots of experiences with scars and stitches. You will notice, as others have said, more of a change after several months. I use a great product line of skin care, Sensaria Natural Bodycare, that has done amazing things with my scars. The products that you could use would be the Sea Silk Mask (bringing new cells to the surface faster/getting rid of the old ones=minimizing the pores, spots, lines, scarring faster) , Advanced Firming Treatment (repairs Collagen), Daily Sunscreen (best sunscreen around as it soaks in and works, doesn't smell or feel like sunscreen), White Tea Calming Serum (to calm and repair with antioxidants), Lutein Serum for repairing and restoring beautiful skin, hair, eyes. You don't need all of these for your son but just to give you an idea of some of the choices.

To keep from the keloids forming, you want to deeply massage it daily, especially on the ends. I had a half dollar size of skin cut out of my cheek four months ago on top of three biopsies. You should see and feel it now after three layers of stitches, and at least 21 on the top layer. Contact me if you would like to know more about the Sensaria products and to try them at a discount as a first time client.

I have seen a lot of scars working in medical. I don't want to discourage you, but it can take awhile, as in years until it's *fully* gone. 2 months is not enough time to really see to much improvement. I have also noticed the lighter the skin, the redder the scar, which will eventually fade to pink, then slightly normal pigmant, then away. Also, the younger someone gets a scar, the more chances it has on going away due to growth rates. Of course everyone's skin is different, but thats just what I have noticed. The suggestions below are great.
Vitamin E helps the collagen in the skin, and keeps it flixible and elastic (just like a waistband). You definately do not want that scar to harden and build scar tissue. The more pliable the skin the easier it will be for new skin cells to grow. We suggested it to all of our post-op patients. Try and be patient. =)
