I was told in elementary school I had mild scoliosis. They monitored it for years and it never got worse. It ended up being a non-issue in the end for me.
My daughter had her 6 year old check up today. I had them check her for scoliosis because it runs in my family. She is showing early onset of scoliosis and we're going to have an x-ray to determine the extent. She's never complained about her back but we want to monitor it.
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced it and what have you done. I've heard in extreme cases a brace or surgery may be needed.
Thanks.

Thank you everyone for sharing your stories and advice. Her x-ray's show a 5 degree curve. I also called a juvenile scoliosis specialist and they informed me that they don't begin to treat until after someone has a 10 degree curve.

I have it and another birth defect that makes my back hurt. My grandparents used to take me to the chiro when I was 3. If I could affort to go every other day I would since its the only thing that makes my back feel better. I have always just "lived" with it. I hope you find something that will help her. Good luck.
My neice had it really bad. SHe wore a brace for months and it did not help.
This past April, she had surgery at the Childrens Hospital at Vanderbilt. I saw her about 2 weeks ago. It is amazing at her progress, straight back, etc.
Of course everyone was worried about surgery but she has bounced back like a trooper. There are some things she cannot do for quite some time... kick a ball, jump into a pool, etc but they are so glad they did this and she is very happy as well.
There is also a very good spine center in the Plano area. I think it is affiliated with Baylor but I am not sure. SIL almost brought neice here for the surgery due to the ratings of this hospital, but, Vanderbilt is highly rated as well and only 2 hrs from their home vs a plane ticket away.
ETA: Insurance covers this procedure. There is no need to try to get it pro bono when you insurance covers it. Pro Bono is great and it is for the cases which are in dire need and no $$.
\My brother and SIL have only paid $300 out of pocket. They are not wealthy, they scrimp and live paycheck to paycheck.
Best wishes.
Scottish Rite in Dallas handles this pro bono if your physician refers you. They have an amazing facility and the doctors are wonderful!
Please please please monitor it and help any way you can.
I was diagnosed around 4, and they said it wouldn't get worse.
12 years later (going on 17) and I may need surgery by the time I'm 18 because no one watched it, and in the past year I've had severe back pain and I can't get out of bed to go to school some days. It progressed a lot. Even if the doctor says it won't at least check up once a year.
Also, up until about a year ago I showed no signs. No leaning, no pain, not a thing. Infact I have great posture. Now I'm miserable.
Also, if she starts to get a chest (I'm a C cup, but I'm pretty small so they're large compared to me, you'd have to be the judge then of what is too big) Start getting her good bras. I'm not talking Victoria's Secret, just bras that truly support. It makes a world of difference some days to me, a good bra or a bad one.
Chiropractic care can help with scoliosis....all natural, no drugs or surgery! Safe. Wor a try I have been adjusted since age 5. Made such an impact in my life that I became a chiropractor. I would love to discuss with you the benefits of chiropractic care. Spectorchiropracticdfw.com
I have scoliosis and had to wear a back brace for 5 years and there was talk of surgery when I was younger but I never ended up getting it. I was xrayed every 6 months to monitor the progression. I deal with a moderate amount of back pain every day due to the scoliosis and I lean significantly to one side due to the curve.
I was just told today my thirteen yr old has it too. They said it was mild and wouldnt do anything about it,just watch . I was told a brace works really well on bad cases. My bosses sis had to use a brace and was better in three years. hope this helps u.
I have scoliosis and lordosis both. I had to wear a back brace for about 2 years, and had it monitered every six months for a few years then once puberty hit once a year at Children's. I had to quit gymnastics also. As an adult is has been a nightmare getting my spinals for my c-sections. I am already dreading it again for the baby we are pregnant with now. I also have to have my hips realigned on a regular basis. My back hurts daily and some days I can barely get out of bed of off the couch.
