i would like to take my son to a child psychologist or counselor (not psychiatrist). he is 8. he has recently become moody and argumentative. i don't want to just pick someone out of the of the directory. I am in the Edmonds area - but would be willing to drive up to 20 miles for a good therapist.
thank you.

Ask your Pediatrician. They should know.

Ask your child's pediatrician for a referral. That's how we got things started when our son's ADHD symptoms became too much. Pediatricians will know who is good with kids and reputable in your area.

If your son has ADHD, as you indicated a few years ago, you probably need to see a developmental pediatrician who can do a full evaluation and give you referals. If you already have a full evaluation (one that takes many hours and is 10 to 15 pages long) you will do best to see a pyschiatrist for treatment, part of which will include a referal to a cognative behavioral therapist, and in additon, a social skills class, and possibly speech therapy, occupational therapy, and in school behavioral and educational interventions.

If your son has ADHD, and is not already being treated, many hours per week, with full medical care by a specialist (psychiatrist, therapist, social skills classes...etc) that is your answer to why he is moody and argumentative. Treatment is difficult and multifacitied. A developmental pediatrician can give you a good treatment plan to follow, and you will see vast improvements with all the conjunctive therapies.

Good luck!

You might try ABCD, in the Northgate area. The receptionist is incredibly helpful, will note your concerns, confer with the group, and steer you to the correct practitioner. They were recommended by my pediatrician.

After reading Martha's answer, I wonder if you may have had
a bad experience with a psychiatrist. I also wonder how you
and DS have been doing in general before "recently".
Sending good thoughts.
