My husband, 11 month old son, and I will be moving to the Houston area in November. We currently live in Connecticut. We'd really like to find a sub division with a great neighborhood and one that is family friendly. I've heard really good things about the Woodlands. Are there specific neighborhoods within the Woodlands or that area that you'd recommend? We're really excited about our move!!!

What can I do next?

I must say I do not live in The Woodlands, but I live at the back of The Woodlands in Magnolia! I love our neighborhood it is quite and so friendly acre track homes and you really see neighbors out walking, riding bikes etc!
Check out Cimarron Country we have a website that you can go to view and see information on it.

Good Luck

Hi L.-

I've lived in The Woodlands for 3 1/2 years now with my husband and 3 children (6,4, and nearly 1). We came from Chicago and have absolutely loved everything about living here!! As you learn about The Woodlands you'll find that it's divided into several villages and then each village has multiple subdivisions within it. All of the villages are wonderful, however some are older and with older subdivisions you will find a variety of families (retirees, empty nesters, high school kids and then some young families). In the newer villages there seems to be a higher concentration of families with young children. I'm in Sterling Ridge and a lot of the families have elementary and preschool age kids right now. Of course there are all types scattered within the village but the majority seem to have young kids.

Truly, The Woodlands is a wonderful place to live and as far as I can tell, you really can't go wrong with any neighborhood.

Please feel free to send a note if you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer. Also, if you need one I have a wonderful neighbor who is a realtor.

Good Luck,
K.

the entire woodlands is family friendly. me and my hubby moved here about 2 and a half years ago and it is awesome. there are walking trails and parks everywhere. it is like city living but with a small town feel. there is a mall within 5 minutes of anywhere you live here in the woodlands, plus there is market street where there are a lot of shops and it is just so awesome. i could go on for a while but just know that the schools out here are exemplary and always just right around the corner. so welcome to the woodlands ahead of time.

L.: My husband and I also just came from Chicago, which we loved very much. We are still in the process of deciding where to live, although we have pretty much settled on Sterling Ridge for the very reasons the previous responder gave. Good luck on your move, and please feel free to email directly if you need any other Houston advice (we had been in Chicago for 7 years, but my husband and I both grew up here).

I lived in the Woodlands from 1996-2007 and it is a great area. We recently moved across the freeway from the Woodlands to Imperial Oaks and I will tell you there is a lot more for the kids and there are a lot of kids in the subdivision, we have one school just for the Imperial Oaks neighborhood and they are currently building another school within the neighborhood. The school district is the same as the Woodlands, Conroe ISD. Although The Woodlands is very family friendly alot of the sections have been there awhile and there may be very few kids on your street (which isn't always a bad thing ;) ) But going from having no kids on our street in the Woodlands to a street with quite a few kids, my girls are much happier. The POA fees are also much less in Imperial Oaks. A few of the activities Imperial Oaks offers is National Night Out--lots of activities for the kids, moonwalks/slides, petting zoo, face painting, magicians, hamburers and hot dogs all at no cost, Halloween party similar activities as already mentioned and several other things throughout the year. There is a website ImperialOaks.com (I think). I've also heard good things about Spring Trails and Legends Ranch.

I moved here 5 years ago from Minnesota, lived there for 8 and for those 8 years I battled to move to texas until I found The Woodlands. Best decision I've ever taken! I live in the Cochran Crossing village, in the last subdivision before Sterling Ridge and my kids are always playing outside (have to drag them inside most of the time). I do agree with the other ladies that Sterling Ridge has the most concentrated part of elementary kids. The schools in the woodlands are the best in the public system - my kids go to Galatas Elementary and it has been continuosly rated as an exemplary school. My husband owns a Mortgage company here in the Woodlands - if you need any loan advice, realtor, or any advice in general feel free to email back!
I'll be happy to show you around if you'd like!!!

L.,

Like others have said, Sterling Ridge in The Woodlands has scads of kids. As I type this, there is a gaggle of elementary schoolers playing out in the cul-de-sac in front of my house.

Coming from Connecticut you are going to LOVE the home prices here in Houston. You get a lot of square footage for the dollar, seriously a ton. Also there are many transplants here from other states--lots of people in your boat--so making friends is a snap. I think you will really like it here. Good luck with your move!

All The Woodlands neighborhoods are great. Some neighborhoods are older than others and some are much more exspensive than others, but regardless of which area you choose you have access to all parks, pools and bike paths. Wonderful schools and endless restaurants and shopping. I would suggest going to The Woodlands Information Center, they haved all the info on all the neighborhoods. Good Luck and Welcome.

Hi L.,
I have lived in this area for 14 years and love it. I would recommend, if you are not at all familiar with the area, that you rent for a little while. There are many villages in The Woodlands and many other neighborhoods out here with all very different things to offer. I have a lot of friends that bought and wished they had rented until they learned the area. There are some great rental properties out there. With the housing market the way it is, you don't want to get stuck in a house or a neighborhood you hate. We sold our house 3 months ago, quicker than we anticipated and could not find another house quick enough. We are renting until we find the right house and I am so glad we are. We are renting in the area I thought I wanted to be in and don't like it. I am so glad we didn't buy here. Take your time and give renting a chance. It does mean you would have to move twice, but better than being stuck. Good luck and welcome to Texas. I have a great real estate agent. She was wonderful. Her name is Tracie Miller at www.traciedirect.com. She knows the area very well and is very nice. I love her. Happy house hunting.
