Seeking Advice About When to Get Pregnant If Starting a New Job

Hi,

I am looking for some advice. My husband and I had planned to start trying for our second child back in July but just as we were thinking about it I was laid off. I have recently found a new and BETTER job which I start on Monday! I am very excited about this but now am thinking about what to do about our family planning.

What do others think about starting a new job and getting pregnant? I was thinking that I should wait at least 6 months, my husband thinks a year. I don’t know if I want to wait an entire year, that will only make our one child older, and I didn’t want them to be that far apart in age. I came from a company that wasn’t very family friendly so I am looking for any advice or thoughts on getting pregnant within the first year of a new job. Thank you in advance for all of your help!

I am due in 2 weeks and have been at my job 6 months. I actually quit my other job and moved while I was preggo already. They don't seem to be upset but I am a RN and everyone around me is preggo too. I don't get a single cent for maternity leave, all I have is my vacation and the rest is unpaid. That is going to be hard. And actually they said you can't get disability if you are even treated for the condition within the first six months. Not sure if that is the same at every job or what. I got preggo with my son right around the six month mark at my old job and never had a problem getting paid for leave.

Well in my opinion. It doesn't matter about the job...they can't fire you because you get pregnant. And if they do or find a reason to do then you fight it. Plain and simple. There is no reason why you can't try now and see what happens. Unless you think it will be too stressful to handle yourself. Then wait the 6 months. Now if you just started you do usually have the 6 month trial period so if you miss a lot of work for morning sickness then they can Fire you that would be the only thing.

My only advice is that if you plan to use FMLA, then you need to be with that company for a year, right?

I would wait a few months so you can hit that 12 month mark in order to be eligible for FMLA. This means that you deliver after you have been with the company 12 months which means you could be pregnant 3-4 months in. Good luck!

I agree with the other posters. They really cant fire you for getting pregnant but i would wait a few months. Most companies do require you to be there for a year when you give birth to qualify for any type of paid maturnity leave. I dont think you would need to wait a year but if it happend now you may not get paid for the time you would have to take off. You have to do what is right for you and your family. Good luck.

I've been pregnant two times on the job-once I got pregnant a few months after I started and the other time I was 4 months pregnant when I started. I work as a lawyer and I can tellyou neither was a pleasant experience. While they cannot fire you because of your pregnancy, if the employer is unhappy about it, they can find other reasons to let you go that do not appear discriminatory to a person on the outside. The legal field is particularly skilled at that, but I'm sure it happens everywhere. So, I would just suggest that no matter if you wait (sometimes conceiving i
doesn't really go according to our plans), assess the attitudes of the workplace. That will be a better gauge. And whatever the attitudes, you can prepare yourself. I will never regret my path, though hard, because I have the kids!
