I'm breast feeding my two month old baby... I'm coming down with the flu, what medications can I take that wouldn't affect him while breast feeding?

What can I do next?

Dr Hale's website http://www.infantrisk.com/ has a lot of information of what is safe and not to take while nursing.
Dr Sears website http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/breastfeeding/while-taki... has some good information on things you can take as well.
I would honestly take as little medication as you have to. All it does is mask the symptoms and can make the illness last longer.
Tylenol is safe to take if you need something for aches or if you get a bad fever that other methods don't bring down.
Make sure you drink as much as you can and don't stop nursing your baby. Your breastmilk contains antibodies which will help protect your baby from the illness. Breastmilk can help prevent your baby from getting sick at all, or if they do get sick it is lessened substantially.
Get better soon!

I always swear by homeopathic oscillococcinum in the first stage of the flu. Mine never lasts for more than 24 hours after taking it. Check with a doctor (preferably an ND) or check the package to see if it's safe while nursing.

have you been officially diagnosed by the dr? We were prescribed Tamiflu when our son had H1N1. The whole family had to take it. :)

In cases such as this, it's always safer to check with your dr before self-medicating.

I agree w/ Sue H. There are meds that can be prescribed for the flu if it is still in the beginning stages. Definately call the doctor on this one.

Oscillococcinum saved my life a few weeks ago and I am still breastfeeding baby #4. I take 3 doses a day for a few days when it's acute.

I also got the flu 4 years ago when I was pregnant with #3 and it only lasted 3 days with the oscillococcinum, lots of rest, lots of water and no sugar.

It's totally safe with breastfeeding and in pregnancy. I don't take meds, even in childbirth, since I know the drugs in childbirth have not been tested for cancer-causing issues, as well as other issues. I error on the side of caution. You can get oscillococcinum almost everywhere now. Good luck.

PS I give a dose to my kids when I've got something viral or if they've been around someone who later comes down with the flu.
