C.,
Health insurance: If you are not covered by a job (as I was not, and couldn't get insurance through my partner, due to gay-unfriendly insurance policies), check out Medicaid and Family Health Plus. You can contact those programs directly, but I found it easier to go through either a social service agency or one of the HMOs that contracts with the. Find a social service agency near you that helps with health care sign ups (dowtown Manhattan there is it Chinese-American Planning Council, but I am sure there is something near you). When I and my daughter were on Medicaid, we used Affinity, but you can call any HMO that contracts with Medicaid. They come to your house, help you fill out the paperwork, etc. Or you can find a van on the street that does it. The important thing is to choose an HMO that is accepted by doctors/clinics in your neighborhood (or that you want to use).
As for actually being pregnant: my partner and I went to Morris Heights Health Center Birthing Center, in the Bronx. I can't recommend it enough. If you have any interest in using midwives and a birthing center, give them a call and take a tour, it is a beautiful place.
Good luck with all.

Hi C., I'm always telling people how much I love my gynecologist. His name is Dr. Plakogiannis, he is with Lenox Hill Medical Group on 95th street between 2nd and 3rd Aves. (The address and phone are 215 E. 95th Street, ###-###-####). I love him, he has a great bedside manner, very attentive, aggressive in my care when he needs to be. I just think he's wonderful. I moved to the Bronx, and I haven't changed to a closer GYN because I don't want to let him go.
Having said all that, my sister was trying to have a baby and she was 37 and was having loads of problems conceiving. Not necessarily because of age but she did. Her GYN has a practice downtown and an infertility specialist right there. She ended up seeing them both with great results. (I'm finally an auntie!! yay). Anyway their names are Dr. Bloomgarden (Gyn) and Dr. Selick (inf. specialist). They are downtown on 30th between 1st and 2nd. Their office number is ###-###-####
Whichever way you go, good luck with it all.
I use Downtown Women at West Broadway. There # is ###-###-####. I had uncommon issues in trying to get pregnant for 3 years. They had the patience and will to work with me. I gave birth to a healthy baby boy who is turning 4 months old next week. Good Luck!

Hi -
I used a Midwife for my births. Her name is Lonnie Morris - she's in the book. She was great! Very patient and knowlegeable.
Don't be afraid to have a baby - it is what your body was meant to do - it will be OK.
God Bless
I had my son at 45--do NOT let "them" scare you!!! It is usually a little harder and takes a little longer sometimes for various reasons, but start with positive energy and BREATHE! I am also a physical therapist who works with women with "challenged fertility," and could spend an hour talking with you (and am willing to do so if you want). First things first--take prenatal vitamins, get crackin' on healthy diet, and a low intensity but regular exercise routine.
don't worry about the age. I had my daughter a few months before I turned 41. She was completely fine, and the pregnancy was great except for those last couple of weeks (sigh). Good luck to you!!
