Seeking Ideas for Child's Birthday Cake Made of Donuts

My daughter is turning 7 and wants chocolate donuts for her birthday cake. We will be serving about 23 guests and I would like to be creative about the "donut cake". I've searched online for pictures of donut cakes but haven't found many. Has anyone made a donut birthday cake, seen one or simply have ideas on how to make something really creative and cute? Would love a link to pictures if you have one. Her party will be at an ice skating rink and we are using a star theme (to tie in with Dallas Stars). You ladies always have such great ideas!! Many thanks in advance!!

Well you could either buy chocolate donuts and have the bakery sprinkle star sprinkles on them and those should be hard to find since the 4th of July is comin up. Use a cupcake 3 tier holder and decorate to go with the theme or you could make small round cakes in the shape of the donut and ice each one.. and you could still use the cupcake holder to display them. Hope that helps a little.

You could do a wedding cake style with tiers and just stack doughnuts. I've done a doughnut tower before and doughnuts actually stack really easily.

How about adpating the "cupcake cake" concept? I see those all the time. Buy both donuts and donut holes (fill in the donut circle with the holes), maybe stack a couple of layers, make the star shape and then slather it with frosting using the Dallas Stars logo as your frame of reference.

Hi there,
In France you can find "Piece Montee", a cake made with stacked cream puffs (choux a la creme). You can image google for pictures. I guess you can use the donut holes instead of the donuts and "glue" them together with caramel.

Contact Edith Adame. She owns Wonderful Cakes. She does a GREAT job designing cakes and coming up with creative ideas! Check out her website (http://wonderfulcakes.spaces.live.com) (They're working on getting a better website up, but her email address is on there)

Hope this helps!

I would check out Google Images: http://images.google.com then search Donut Cake. There are lots of results.

In terms of stars, you can either ask a local bakery if they can make star-shaped donuts (I've seen them, just don't know who makes them), or simply have star sprinkles spread on them. You can also get some plastic stars and have them placed radomly on the finished cake.

Good luck! Sounds like fun!

I saw a really cool jack-in-the-box cake once that had donuts as the "spring" part. I don't know if you want to pursue that idea, but you could adapt it to your Dallas Stars theme. Make star-shaped bases out of styrofoam. Spray them with non-toxic paint, or cover them with foil. Stack some donuts on each base to make a tower. Place a star-shaped cookie on top of each stack if you can make it stay with frosting or toothpicks. You can make 7 bases and stacks, one for each year, if you want. Place the candles at the base of each stack so your daughter can blow out 7 candles. It'll look great, incorporate the donuts easily, and make a very different birthday "cake" for your birthday girl.
