I was trying to come up with a fun idea for my 4 year old son's "family" birthday party. I want it to be fun for both the kids and the adults(10 kids and 25 adults)...I came up with a magician. Has anyone had a magician come for a birthday party? If so...where do I start looking for one? How much did it cost? Did you like it/was it fun? Bad idea? Thanks for the help in advance!

What can I do next?

You might call Landini entertainment. Perhaps they could tell you of someone. I just looked up their website and found this number. ###-###-####.

My children were the youngest out of 8. I was always concerned about the older year children. I had party games set up for the kids with prizes for everyone. The birthday girl/boy always went first then it was young to oldest. Everyone wanted to play or the older was went along and totally missed the the donkey/purposely lost (which made everyone roar with laughter). We played pin the tail, bingo, foam darts, pinata, win/lose/draw etc. The parents loved to watch or help the younger ones. Sometimes the prizes were wrapped and sometimes they weren't. They could always trade. In addition they got their goodie bags. It was important to keep it a little structured. My sister had a Barney party many years ago for her daughter. Barney came to visit. We learned that Barney was her husband wearing a costume. She rented a costume and he did an amazing job. We still talk about that to this day. The kids never knew who it was. The adults were having so much fun, they never notice who was missing from the party.

Hello,

There is a gentleman named Bob who owns a Magic shop in downtown Elmhurst; it's called Bob's Magic shop. He has been in business since I have lived here - over 15 years. He has classes for all ages, and I am sure he can tell you about magicians who are available for kids parties. His business literally pulls people from not only all the surrounding suburbs, but from out of state as well. I think he even has a theater upstairs and performs shows for the kids (and allows his students to perform as well.
His number is ###-###-####. His website is: www.bobjamesmagic.com Good luck! C. Bajkowski

M.,
My dad is a magician and often does kid's birthday party's, and yes, EVERYONE (including the parents) has a wonderful time. Some advice he's learned: Stay clear of the "clown magicians" with little ones as they may not all be ready for a clown yet! :) I would look online under child entertainer, or children's magician and you should get some good hits. He charges $100 for an hour long party and I think that includes balloon animals for the children, but I do know he is at the very low end with his pricing. Unfortunately, my dad lives in CO, otherwise I would give you his number. But if your party is in July, he'll be visiting and would love to do it! :) Good luck!

I had a magician for my son's 6th birthday party.
I think it's a good idea if you have the right magician.
I wasn't happy with ours. He teaches magic and because of that his show seemed more like a class. He was very strict about everyone sitting still and being quiet. If he was interrupted during one of his tricks he would start over. We were only allowed to open our mouth to answer one of his questions or to laugh at his lame jokes. I think his jokes failed because his voice was so monotone. It was hard to tell that he was kidding. A few park districts in the area use him for classes or parties so I felt comfortable hiring him. It would be good if you could see your magician in action before you hire him/her so you know exactly how he/she interacts. That was our mistake.

I did a magaician last year, I thought the magician was terrible! The kids were engrossed for most of it but even an hour seemed long! I hired Patch 22 to do a mobil petting zoo the year before and EVERYONE LOVED IT! EVERYONE! I will probably do that again this year! Good Luck!

I would highly recommend Petey the Clown. He does silly magic and all the adults and kids love him. We saw him at someone else's party and we laughed and laughed and then hired him for my daughter's party. People who were at our party then hired him for their kids' parties.

We've done magician, clown, theme parties, etc. Nothing was as much fun as getting the parents involved in playing games. Let the parents place scarf on their childs eyes and turn them for pin the tail on the donkey (use tape instead of pins), hide and seek, red rover, and break the piniata. Cookout for food while kids are playing. Hamburgers, hotdogs, chips. Simple but probably the first cookout of the season for many of the people. Basement if it rains. Still fun. Have a fruit punch bowl and as assortment of fruits on the table for all to enjoy.
