Sensative Lips and Pregnancy

Was just curious if anyone else has encountered sensative lips (redness and swelling) during the last 3-4 weeks of their pregnancy. I am approximately 36 weeks, with low blood pressure and normal test results weekly. Sensativity in my lips has been known to strike at different times, at 2am when I'm sleeping, while I'm eating (various foods) or while I'm doing nothing at all. For the last week, I have tried Carmex, Blistex and everything in between. I welcome any suggestions or over the counter remedies before seeking a dermatologists expensive advice. As much as I don't mind the occasional Angelina Jolie look, I really miss my happy old lips. Thanks Moms!

My lips swell as part of an allergic reaction. I bought some vitamin e oil in a bottle and spread that on to ease the sensitivity.

Argh - the lip allergies. I've developed them over the last 10 years or so and they're definitely getting worse - and changing! I used Burt's Bees for years and years, and then suddenly I'm allergic to peppermint oil. If my husband uses it then kisses me, I react. Even Vaseline was making it worse, which used to be my fallback cure. So now I'm using Sun Lipcare by Alba Botanical. It's at Whole Foods and Central Market, and maybe some other places. It has sunscreen in it, which used to be a trigger for me in other brands, but I've never had a problem with it. I would imagine that the Aquaphor idea is a good one, too, but then again I would have thought that plain old Vaseline would have worked forever! I didn't really notice increased reaction during pregnancy, but I did get the itchies really badly in my last month or two. I got to the point that I was taking Benadryl nearly every night to sleep. My doctor said it was better to get relief and sleep than to not take anything and not be rested. Good luck!

I'd recommend a vitamin B supplement (pill) + B12 sublingual.

I'd stay away from anything "medicated" things like Carmex have ingredients that keep you hooked. Go with a mild product like Burt's Bees or Aquaphor. And keep drinking water. I've noticed my lips are drier than normal since I've been pregnant again sometimes I think it has to do with the hormones other times the way I'm breathing -they seem more irritated after I work out. And this weather certainly isn't helping any!

I didn't know there was such a thing as lip allergies, but I developed something similar during my 3rd pregnancy & almost immediately as I was pregnant this time, my lips became SO dry & chapped. I use Arbonne's chap stick, but I was in the Vitamin Shoppe last week and got some Burt's Bee chap stick and really really like it. It is healing them, I can tell. I hope you find something that works for you. And good luck with that new baby!

for years i've been a huge fan of burt's bees. it's ALL natural and the peppermint oil in it cools and heals. i never get chapped or irritated because this is on my lips 24/7. do you wear lipstick or gloss? i wonder if your hormones cause you to be allergic to something you are wearing for part of your pregnancy.
when i'm pregnant i'm allergic to my wedding rings - my finger gets all rashy.

I have skin therapy product that I think will help you. If you'd like to pick it up, I have a new travel size that you can have. It is made by a registered pharmacutical company and I have the litature about the product. (no harsh chemical ingredients to affect you or your baby)
Just let me know if you are interested.

Gotta say ditto to the aquaphor. Sometimes I think I am like the dad on "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" with mine. He says windex solves all ailments..for me it is aquaphor!! I imagine it will at least help a lot:) Havae you tried some benadryl? I am wondering if it is more of an allergic type reaction? Good luck..I hope you meet your daughter soon! ~A.~

Have you changed toothpaste recently? I am a hygienist and know that some people are allergic to certain ingredients in some toothpastes. Redness, swelling, and sensitivity of the lips is one of the reactions. (Another is tissue sloughing from the inside of your mouth)

So try switching your toothpaste to plain Crest paste - avoid any tartar-control, whitening, or multi-care toothpastes and see if that doesn't help. It surely is worth a try. Good Luck.

I have always had sensitive lips. Before, during and after pregnancy! I am like some of the other ladies on using Aquaphor. I noticed my daughter licking her lips alot lately and I tried everything. I finally got the Aquaphor and it works. I can eat certain things and my lips will swell up. Certain things like strawberries, oranges or even cantaloupe and watermelon. Just as long as I rinse my mouth off after I eat these things I'm okay. The weather also affects my skin. When the weather changes so much like it has lately it wreaks havoc with my skin so that might be something to consider. Also I noticed some women said Burt's Bees helped them. I used it for a while and it was okay but if you get the lip balm with the peppermint it can make your lips start to itch and burn. Good luck!

I never encountered that problem, but rather than Carmex (I feel it makes mine more sensitive), I highly recommend Aquaphor Healing Ointment from Eucerin. Comes in several different sizes. I began using it when my daughter was born 5 1/2 years ago...I use it for anything and everything but an NEVER without a travel tube in my pocket. You can find it at Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens, etc.
Hth! Good luck!!
