Sharp Toddler Toenails and Fingernails

My son, now 2.5 y.o., has always had very sharp fingernails. Since the very first pictures of him, he almost always has little scratch marks on his nose near his eyes from scratching himself when he's tired or falling asleep. I know babies have very thin and sharp nails, but I thought he would have out grown this by now. His nails are still VERY sharp and thin, and they grow like WEEDS. If I don't cut them every 5-6 days he'll end up with more scratches on his face simply from rubbing his eyes when he wakes up or falls asleep. This doesn't happen once in a while -- it's constant. They need to be extremely short all the time. His toenails also grow very fast and are very thin -- they are not brittle at all -- they actually bend a lot and the edges will get caught on socks or shoes and the white part will "peel" off if I don't get to them fast enough. It doesn't hurt him and it's not the whole nail -- just the edge if I don't keep them very short. Is it normal for his nails to still be so thin at this age? Does anyone else have a toddler with nails like this? I don't know of any other one!

What can I do next?

Yes - my kids too. I switched over from the baby (safety first) nail clippers to normal adult fingernail clippers. For some reason the nails are not as sharp after being cut with an adult clipper. I also make sure to get the corners. Those corners are like daggers if you don't cut them right.

Ooooh Ooooh I Doooooo!!! lol.. BOTH of my girls have the same thing going on.. I actually asked a nurse we went to see on monday, because one of the twins' big toe nails are kinda WAVY... weird... but she said it was alllll normal at 2.5 they are still kinda developing... hhahahaha but she said if they were coming off the nail beds, or changing color then worry... them growing so fast is a GOOD thing.. means they are getting their nutrients.. sooooo.. It looks like you must be doing something right, mama....

I don't have a great answer for you except keep trimming them! My son is almost 4, had nails exactly like your son's and just recently they are starting to get a little harder. I've had the exact same issue you are dealing with. I don't know if it is normal or not, but you aren't alone.

my son, who's 3 1/2 now. We call them "the dragon claws"! He hates having them cut, too. I know when they need it bc he wakes up with the scabby nose, he rubs his face when he's sleepy! Yes, indeed, and he has wielded them on my squishy tummy a few times, when he was about 2 1/2 and having a fit!
