We have tile and berber-like (no shag/ pile) carpet. I want a vaccuum with a powerful sucker but doesn't need the brushes really - they just flip the dirt around and away from the vaccuum. Has anyone had success with a great vaccuum. My friend recommended a shop vac becuase they have awesome suction. Any advice?

What can I do next?

I have had every vaccume imaginable but so far the Oreck and Kirby are my top two pics. I really like the oreck these days though it's much lighter, I have three weeks before I will pop!
Good Luck!

I LOVE my Dyson! While it has a pricier tag on it, it is bagless (never buying bags again!) and you just rinse its HEPA filter. It sucks up so much dirt, it's amazing! It will fill the cup every week from one room!! I did see it on-sale this week at Costco for a great price (in the $300's as opposed to the $500s)...but worth every penny!!

Bought a Dyson and love it. Well worth the money. You can check them out in Sears. Try one.

I LOVE my Dyson! I got the purple one that picks up animal hair. It works wonders. The scary thing is that now I can see all the dirt, hair, etc. because it has a clear container. You don't use bags with the Dyson. I would never go back to my old style vaccuum!

I love the Oreck. You can use it on wood, tile and all kinds of carpet. It is light and easy for kids to maneuver. We had our original one for ten years, part of which time I used it to clean an office building fine times a week. We have wood and tile on our main floors and it is the best vacuum ever. The actual Oreck stores sell refurbished models for a fraction of the price for a nicer model. I have always owned their most basic vacuum and love it still.

I have a Dyson, pricey, but worth it so far (~2 years). I haven't had any problems on different surfaces, it really does keep suction even when the cannister is full. Shop vacs are great 'cause they can suck up EVERYTHING, but the ones I've used are unwieldy, clumsy, and LOUD.
Good Luck! Good Mommin'!

Shop vacs are nice. My brother-in-law has one he straps to his shoulder. It's small but convienient. THey come in all sizes though. It picks up water as well as dirt. The drawbacks to these vaccums are that you can't get them fixed. You just have to replace them which can be expensive and they're pretty noisy. They are also kind of bulky and hard to store, but they do have good suction. I hope you find what you want. Good luck

Go for the Dyson, they are lightweight, can use on carpet or wood and excellent at picking up animal hair! It is AMAZING how much dust it picks up! I would never go back to an old bag style vaccuum!

My mom has a dyson dc17. I couldn't believe all the dirt it pulled out of the carpet. I borrow her's all of the time. I'm going to get one with my tax return. It is definately worth the money.

I have an Oreck and love it. We have hard wood floor and tile, three dogs and my son and I are both allergic to dust. The oreck works great. My husband has a shop vac and the few times he has used it in the basement I hated it. It is noisy and throws out dust. Good luck.M.

hahahah. We used a shop vac to vacuum our rug for YEARS and hated it! With our lab, we had to vacuum it every other day..and it took 30 mins and lots of elbow grease. We FINALLY broke down and bought a Dyson DC17 (with BBB 20% coupon). It was hard to spend that much money, but we had a baby on the way at the time and saw it as an investment. WORTH EVERY PENNY!! The DC17 is specificaly for pet hair, hence it's immense power. I suppose if you don't have pets, you might not need that model. But Dyson rocks. Again, it's an investment! Worth it =)

A shop vac would be way too cumbersome to use as a regular vacuum. It's a huge bulky noisy pain in the neck with good suction and horrible filtration.
5 Years ago I did a lot of vacuum research and ended up buying a Sebo. I love it. It has HEPA filtration which is hospital grade and self adjusts for any floor surface whether it's carpet or a hard flooring. I thas great suction. I too have berber carpet in some areas. I didn't want to drag around a big hose and canister so I opted for the upright. I have been so happy with it. I suggest (if you possibly can) getting a good quality vacuum that will last you years and years. It's an important investment.

Hi V.,

Simplicity (like the sewing machine) makes an excellent vacuum. However, they are VERY expensive (like a thousand dollars). If you're looking for a long-time investment this would be the way to go. You can find these at any vacuum shop.

I currently own a Dyson and DISLIKE it very much. It has broken down on me several times and it is very costly to fix it. The shop where I took my Dyson showed me the Simplicity. That's the next thing on my wishlist. The shop is located in the King Soopers Shopping area on 120th and Colorado BLVD.

Good luck

We went through several vacuums- about 1 each year. Last Christmas my husband said lets go to a vacuum store and ask advice & get one that is good. We did & we purchased a simplicity which has been a really good vaccuum. I would recommend going to your local vacuum store- not one that specializes in one name brand but one that has several different brands & ask them. I know when we went the salesman told us of a vaccuum that you can use on your hardwood/tile then bring it to your carpet as well without having any problems but we didn't purchase that one. And I can't remember what it was. You will pay a little more for a good vaccuum but if you are like us it will save you in the long run & you will be happier with it. (we also have a 5 year warranty on our vaccuum- which is nice. )
good luck.

A shop vac is nice, but hard to clean the entire carpet with. We have berber carpet also, and our shop vac works, but it takes a lot longer to vacuum, so unless you only vacuum once every week or two, I would suggest another vacuum in addition to the shop vac. I wish I could recommend one, we just havent had much luck with vacuums either.
