My 21mth old daughter woke up several times last night arching her back stiffening her legs crying. Usually its gas and she will let me rub her tummy and/or hold her knees to her chest til it works out.Last night she wouldn't she would scream and fight me so I didnt force her she finally would get into a awkward position and fall back to sleep. She seems better today and has ate and drank but hasn't had a bm. Should i get gripe water at her age? Anyone else experienced this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Everyone was right it was gas/constipation, I got the pear juice mixed it with water and told her it would help her tummy feel better, she gladly drank it after the explanation. She usually only drinks water or milk. Thank you all so much! I am a very grateful Mommy:)

Could be constipation making her tummy hurt and increasing gas. Try some pear juice.

2 "big raisins" (prunes).

Kids love them, and they keep things moving along.

Definitely sounds like constipation. My son was on Miralax at about a year old because he was having hard BM's. And took gripe water at six months.
If she's eating baby food, give her some strained prunes and/or pear juice.
We always had to fold our son's knees to his chest and massage his belly with pretty firm pressure and after about 10 minutes, he'd get the blockage out.

My son used to get constipated when he was young. The pediatrician suggested warm water (2- 3 oz) mixed with a tablespoon of Karo syrup (corn syrup). Apparently the sugar helps the intestine absorb the water more quickly, rather than passing as urine. Constipation is really about "loosening" the stool, so keep her hydrated and try some diluted prune juice or the Karo syrup. It worked for my son every time and within 24 hours!

M.:

You should keep her hydrated...that will help with her getting her BM out. Try watered down gatorade or grape or pear juice.

If she doesn't have a BM in 24 hours - you can take her temperature (if she'll lay still that long) rectally - as that might help stimulate her colon to let her go.

Call your pediatrician and ask them how they would handle it....if she starts running a fever....I would call.

It could be either constipation, Pear juice will usually work with in 24 hrs.. or it could be acid reflux.

What did she eat for dinner and beyond last night?
I agree to keep her hydrated.

My daughter has been up every night for the last 5 nights, I think her acid reflux is getting worse. If you think it is reflux, before bed give her some yogurt that should help.

Good luck
