My 7 month old has had a cold for 2 1/2 weeks now. I thought it was getting better and now were back to the nasty runny nose, congetion and little cough. When should I take him to the doctor? I just took him to urgent care four days ago to check his ears and they were ok then. I know a cold usually lasts a week and Im sure he just probably caught another one. I just wonder how long is it safe for such a little one to be sick.

What can I do next?

take him in. Why not?
"Colds" usually run its course in 7-10 days.
Your baby has been sick for, 2.5 weeks.
He is only 7 months old.
So take him to the Doctor.
How is his chest?
Post nasal drip can also cause:
coughing,
and/or secondary infections in the chest. I know, that happened to me, just from a head cold.

As long as Urgent Care checked ears and listened to his lungs it is most likely a cold. I took my daughter in (10mo) for a cold that would not go away and the dr said babies can get LOTS of colds in one winter, it's a pain. You just have to make sure his ears and lungs are ok. (My daughter's did drop into her lungs and she needed a breathing treatment) I would bet he is ok, but always go with your mommy's instinct. You could call your dr and speak with a nurse to help you decide if you need to take him in.

Sometimes they can get like this when they are teething. When my son was teething we didn't even notice until a tooth came thru. He never acted any different. My daughter is a whole different story. She had cold symptoms for about 2 months when she first started cutting teeth, runny nose, cough, irratable, occasional fever! She would sometimes even refuse bottles. 7 months is about the age when teething starts, of course it could be weeks before you see a tooth. Normally if it's a cold the dr will tell you to use a cool mist humidifier, elevate the crib mattress at the end where their head is and use baby nasal spray and the aspirator. In most cases they won't give a Rx so it may be a waste of time heading to the dr.

Make sure the baby is hydrated.
Temp doesn't go above 101'.
Most colds recycle themselves-
make sure all members of your house wash-wash-wash
their hands, and don't sneeze or cough into open air.
Keeps hands away from noses and eyes-
that's how viruses transmit.

Call your pediatrician in the morning. I'm sure he/she will advise you
on the best course of action!

Good luck!

My son's dr. said there are three different viruses going around right now. So he could have caught a cold or he could just be teething. Did the Dr. at urgent care give baby antibiotics or say anything about the runny nose, congestion and cough?
