Sick Child - Hartly,DE

Let me start with saying that I have already had my daughter to the doctor (twice) and had blood work done. Now I am looking for input from other moms.

My six year old daughter was sent home from school Tuesday morning with temp of 100.7. Gave her some medicine at school and by the time we got home (10:45 am) it was down to 99.9 and stayed down until about 3:30 pm when it went to 102.7. Gave her more medicine and it went down only to spike again. Took her to the doctor Wednesday morning, positive for strep. Started her on antibotic (5 day regimen). Was told she could go back to school on Friday but her temp was back at 102.8 so that was a no go. The only thing that kept is down was rotating Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours...if we go to 4 hours it spikes again.

After 4 days, he temp was still spiking as high as 103.8. She would be ok one minute and miserable the next. Took her back to the doctor on Saturday afternoon, strep test now shows negative. Blood work doesn't show anything yet (except young white count is high showing she's fighting something). They changed her antibotic and she seemed better yesterday. Fever stayed down all day.

She is barely eating anything (a bite of toast maybe, a very small amount of applesauce, some chicken noodle soup) but is drinking some. Fever was still gone this morning and she wanted to go to school so I let her. I have been second guessing that decision all day because she just isn't herself yet. Her teacher has given me updates throughout the day and she seemed better after lunch but her temp was 99.6 late morning.

Suggestions/Thoughts/Helpful Hints...what do you think?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So far so good. She made it through the day. Felt better after eating lunch. If I can keep her eating, I think she is on the mend. Thanks ladies.
5/1/13 - Still on the mend. Not quite eating right yet but much better. All tests negative except the slightly elevated white count. They are going to recheck her next week (when medicine is done) just to be sure. Her throat (tonsils I think) were very inflammed and swollen Monday night. Last night they still looked swollen but not as much and not inflammed...we will see. It was a very rough week.

Shes still fighting something but it seems the 2nd antibiotic is doing its job, just needs more time. Most likely she had strep and a secondary infection of some sort. If she felt like going to school, I would probably let her and let the teacher call if she can't make it.

I agree with Mymission. The 1st antibiotic knocked the infection down enough that the strep test was negative - but it didn't really get rid of it. Hopefully the 2nd antibiotic will work, and in a day or two she'll feel much better. Just don't quit taking the antibiotic until it's all gone.

And, try some probiotics and/or lots of yogurt to get her stomach back on track after all these antibiotics. That could cause her some stomach upset even after the infections are gone.

My grand daughter had strep and was in the hospital for a week with it. Her throat swelled nearly shut. I don't think I could have put the tip of my pinky in the hole back there.

She was on IV antibiotics and they didn't do much. She didn't get totally back to herself for over a month. She just didn't have the strength she did before it.

After a tough week like that I think I would have had her stay home for a couple days of healthy recovery to regain her strength, stamina and immunity back, especially at that young age. I have seen waaaaaaaaay too many episodes where my little guy felt great and then a day later was sick again for a few more days.

It sounds like the 2nd medicine is working. I would've sent her to school today but would have felt guilty about it too.

As the teachers told me once when my kid was sick for most of a week. As long as the temp is below 100, send him to school. If there is a problem, we'll call you.

It almost sounds like a severe ear infection on top of the strep. My son would get the same way when his ears were infected, but never had strep at the same time. I'm assuming the doc looked at her ears when you were there, but now that the strep is negative maybe another infection is present.

Hope she gets better!
