My son is 9 months old and I can't get him to sip from his sippy cup. He will only bite it. Any suggestions on how to get him to sip?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I tried taking out the valve and he now knows there is something in there. I'm going to get the Nuby today. Thank you all for your help!

Mine doesn't do sippy cups either, but has no problem with straws. He won't suck on sippies, but I gave him a Take'n Toss straw cup a few months ago and he took to it great. The best no-spill straw cup is the Munchkin one. They carry it at Target. There is less to assemble with it, and it cleans pretty well.

There are stoppers in the lid that prevent the liquid from coming out unless they suck. Take the stopper out and he should get the idea soon.

I agree with the other mom on the straw cup. My son took to that easier than anything else...Plus those cups are a ton of fun for the baby (but they can be a little leaky if not put together just right).

I told my youngest it was just like a bottle and he figured it out after I told him that. Of course, this suggestion may only work if your son has used bottles. Good Luck !

Hello, I had the same problem. She wouldn't drink from a cup to get enough liquids. I ended up using the Nuby also or one with the soft tops most like the bottle. She wouldn't drink out of any that had the hard tops till she was older.

I agree with a pp, this isn't a biggy. He'll get it eventually. And pretty soon probably. I don't think there is any 'trick'. You just keep offering it, he'll learn. My little one played with his sippy waaaaaayy more than he drank from it at this age.

He will figure it out. My 7 month old son is doing the same. I like the Avent sippies, but he hasn't figured out that you have to suck on it...he chews. I went out and bought a pack of the sippies by Nuby. You don't have to suck on it for the liquid to come out. When you chew on the soft spout it opens up and the liquid comes out...no sucking. Once he has the hang of that then you can move to a more advanced sippie. This cup does not leak unless something is pressing (squeezing)the spout.

A feeding therapist told us to remove the stoppers, they need to figure out that there's liquid in there... so teach him at the highchair (it will be messy) or put a mat down... let him learn that is where juice/milk comes from in a cup :) once he figures that out he'll learn to suck w/ the no drip stoppers in it...

We also used these (they're BPA free) - http://www.thesoftlanding.com/nubysippycups.html they're cheap and available at walmart! They come w/ no valve - but they're still virtually leak free.

Good luck :)

I had the same problem with my daughter until a friend of mine suggested the NUBY sport sippie cup. You can get it at Babies R' Us. It is so similar to a bottle in style, that they get used to it right away and then you can gradually switch to the NUBY regular sippie cup and then transition to a regular sippie. Many of my friends have tried this as well and it works.

Keep trying. :) We started at 7 months with a sippy cup with my daughter. She was 10 months before she started using it the right way.

We found that when she was first starting the Take n Toss cups were the easiest for her to use for some reason. Once she got the hang of those we could transfer to other cups for her.

Show him how the lips should be on the cup. Then bring your mouth to the cup. Make sounds as though you are drinking from it. I feel he needs to see how it is done. It will take time but he will catch on sooner or later.
I hope this gives you an idea.

I took the little stopper piece out from under the lid , put just a little water in it, and let my son discover that there was something inside. It takes a couple of times of that and then I put the stopper piece back in. I just kept giving him the cup. I would leave it out with water in it, so he could try any time he wanted. Don't fret...he'll get the hang of it. :o)

He is cutting teeth. We all go through that and through alot of sippy cups. He is chewing on his sippy cup because it is the best thing that he has found to chew on.
All those chew things aren't worth it. I will tell you what my daughter liked best to chew on. If you go to Michaels' Craft Store, they have the great big huge foam letters in their foam dept (50 Cents). They are really thick and she chewed on those. They didn't break off as easily as you think they would and it was hard enough but soft enough that it satisifed her. Once she found something that she liked she quit chewing no her sippy cups. She now uses them to drink out of them instead.
Good luck.

He is teething, all he will do is bite. When he is ready to sip, he will sip. I bout a Gerber, Dr. Brown, and another pricy one, and it was the First Year 4 for 2.99 that he sipped on & Chewed.

Good Luck and God Bless,

Hi L.! Try Nuby's. They have top which needs to be sucked silike a nipple and come is 7 oz, 9 oz and 10 oz cups. I had a hard time getting my daughter to use the regular sippy cups as well and tried different types. They Nuby's work great and now she can use any type of sippy cup. Good luck.

Hi L.... my 9month old does this too... however my 2.5yr old got the sippy quick at that age... so what i'm saying is somethings take time... I just let my youngest play with it with water as much as possible... I also found she doesn't like the hard sippy cups as much as the gerber and the nuby so try switching it up... have you tried giving him a straw cup...maybe he can suck already
