Sleep Number Beds, Anyone Have One?

We've had bad luck with mattresses. And my husband is an entire 14 inches taller than me, so I think what feels firm / soft enough for a mattress for him is WAY too firm for me. Needless to say, the mattress we have now is lousy, we are both dealing with back pain all the time and we are really interested in getting a sleep number mattress.

Does anyone have one of these, or has had one?
Is it a good thing to buy? Any problems?
I am looking at the most basic line then have, I think the c3. I really don't think we need all the bells and whistles of the more expensive models.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hmmm....lots of conflicting info here, but I appreciate everyone's responses. It's really good to know that a lot of people just think these things are glorified air mattresses, definitely will re-think this.
I am especially concerned because it sounds like the people who have big weight differences seem to have the most problems, and my husband is so tall, I am thinking he might fall into "the pit" as someone called it.
Maybe we will just buy a bed through Costco instead. We have had good luck there with mattresses for our kids, they have comfier mattresses than we do! By the way, buyer beware of mattress stores, we got two lemons in a row from our local mattress store in San Pedro. And when we are talking king sized beds, that's a lot of dough to spend.

My husband and I have one. Its definitely not all its cracked out to be. And feels wayyyy different then the one you lay on in the store.

We called to complain and they even sent us a thick foam topper but it still didn't make too much difference.

If you ask me its a very expensive, glorified air mattress!

I have a Sleep Number (Queen size, basic model that we purchased in 2005). HATE it....yes, hate is a strong word and we HATE it! I like a soft mattress, my hubby likes a firm mattress (he's also about 100 lbs heavier than I am). We thought it would be perfect and in theory it should be. The problem is that even if we stay completely on our own side, his weight makes my side feel firmer (even when I dial down the setting even more) and my side being softer causes him to roll into "the pit" (as he refers to my side). I believe if we each had our own beds, it wouldn't be bad but sharing one is horrible. They are essentially expensive air mattresses and just like an air mattress, they move with added or removed weight.

If you want to still consider a SN, I suggest the extra money for the top of the line because I have heard those are better. I would also recommend that you don't just try one for a minute of two in the store...lay there and actually move like you would when you are sleeping and see how it truly feels. See what extras they have on their models.

We have bought 5 for ourselves and family members. We know 2 others who did. Most like them when they sleep on them.
Since you buy from Select Comfort, keep the boxes and you can return it if it doesn't work out.
I personally think you MUST visit a store and try out the models for a long time. There is a difference in the feel to them. There are also some Radisson hotels that use sleep number so you could sleep a night on one.

We've had ours for over 9 years. I like to sleep on a cloud, my husband likes to sleep on a slab of granite. The sleep number bed is the only one that accommodates both our tastes. We've been perfectly happy with it. I don't know which model we have (it was one of the more expensive ones at the time) and I don't remember what we paid for it (it WAS the most expensive mattress we'd ever purchased). Considering how much of our lives is spent on a mattress, it makes sense to get a really great one.

I have one. I don't remember what model it is, but it has two different chambers. That way he can adjust his side to his liking, and I can adjust mine to my liking.

We love it! We've had very little back issues since we bought it. If/when we need to buy a new mattress, we'll buy a new sleep number in a heart beat!

I have stayed at a few hotels that have them. I think our inflatable mattress is more comfortable. I wouldn't waste money on them.

If you can afford them I would look at the tempurpedic line.

My grown son has had a Sleep Number bed for several years and LOVES it. He has replaced a couple parts over the years instead of needing to replace the whole bed, and it packs and moves a lot easier than a regular mattress. Of course he is sleeping in a king size all by himself.... I think..(o:

My mom has one that I'm sleeping on alone at her house this week. I've also slept on it with my husband. Both ways are terrible. There is a distinct ridge between the two sides of the bed. Even when the numbers are at the same level. I don't recommend it. I'm not sure on the model, but I know it was super expensive. Just get regular bed with a pillow top and call it a day. It's firm (like you do'nt feel like you're gonna fall in or off, but the pillow top gives a bit of softness without making it feel like you're in a hammock! Good luck!

We replaced our bed with a sleep number when I was pregnant with my twins. It was a lifesaver. If either of you are on the 'heavier' side, you will want the thicker matress because if you do not have the bed on a firmer setting you can bottom out onto the frame on the thinner one.
Also, there is a foam boundary around the edge that took some adjusting to. You will not be comfortable sleeping at the edge of the bed. For that reason, I recommend getting the widest bed you can reasonably fit in your space. We got a queen but I dream of having their expanded queen or king for the extra room.
We have not had any major problems. we did end up requesting an insert to put in the middle (we have a double chamber bed) because we ended up rolling towards the middle. The insert fixed this problem and I have been comfortable ever since (no morning backpain - barring uninvited guests).

My husband is 12 inches taller than me and he loved firm mattresses and my hips require a slightly or even a more slightly soft mattress. This has been the best thing we ever did!

We just bought one over a year ago with the adjustable frame and the vibration. We love it. We bought the CalKing, but all one frame, rather than 2 beds pushed together...so when our frame goes up, the whole thing does. We can sit and watch movies and I read the books to the kids and everyone has their spot. My husband had a head cold a few weeks ago and we were able to raise the head of the bed just enough to take the pressure off.

When we bought it, I was pregnant with our 4th and our mattress was 10 years old, so I talked him into it. I like that if a part wears out, you can just buy that part....not get rid of the whole thing. We also get adjusted by our chiropractor, so that helps us with our back pain, but a good night's rest and proper support after an adjustment is wonderful.

I LOVE the vibration part of it. If I can't sleep, I turn it on and I pass out. I do the same, throwing my kids into the bed. Also, my job is very physical and I'm on my feel 90% of the time, so by the time bedtime comes, the vibration on my legs feels divine. My husband told me we didn't need all those bells and whistles, but we both are sure glad we got them. We use them more than we ever thought we would.

My girlfriend has one, so I checked hers out and waited 2 years before we bought one. No problems at all. We did watch the guys put it together upon delivery, so when we moved, we knew how, where and what.

The deal from Alana H. below, about the same numbers, but it feels different, is because the number is based up on the amount of pressure exerted from above. So my husband and I do not weigh the same and we can have the same number, but if we trade sides, it's not remotely the same. The number is based on your body exactly.

Our last bed was a Simmon's Worldclass Beautyrest and he paid 1/2 of what we did for our Select Comfort. We loved it because it has springs, but they were not connects, so when my husband moved, I never felt a thing. We both were supported well. Sometimes we do miss that bed, since the Select Comfort is still a glorified air mattress. They are totally different...but we are glad overall, that we bought the Select Comfort.

Maybe stay at a hotel that has Select Comfort for a few nights. The first night, we weren't sure, since It feel different, but a few nights into it, we were happy. It's cheaper than buying it and regretting it. Also, you can buy them online when people are selling them for fraction of the cost. You can also get a new zipper topper for hygiene reasons.

Someone said that you can return it, which is true, but you can't return the frame....just the other parts. FYI. Our salesman wasn't very intelligent....on oh, so many levels.

Try a bed with a bunkie board instead of a traditional box spring. Both my daughter have one and when my back hurts from our brand new mattress I go sleep in their beds. aaaaahhhhh.....I don't know what it is but man they feel good. you could try putting a sheet of plywood between your mattress and box springs also. Good Luck! I feel your back pain.
