Mattress Is Too Firm

We just hit the 30 day mark with our new mattress. I love it, but now my husband says it's too soft and makes his back hurt. The 60 day return policy also comes with a 15% exchange fee! Any ideas on how to make our current mattress more firm on one side?
Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thanks Mamas! We are headed back to the mattress store tonight. I wish we had thought through the purchase more and bought a sleep number, but it's too late now. We cannot get a refund. I hadn't thought about it being easier to soften a mattress rather than firm one. I am worried that my husband will never be happy. He complained about our last mattress, too! (Too firm) I've been fine with both, although I like this one more.

Thanks again!

I would definitely return it. I know it costs $ to do so but it's better to pay the 15% now than to end up having to buy a new mattress in a few months because your husband is uncomfortable. When we bought our mattress we were told to find the one that feels soft enough (if you like a softer mattress) and then pick the mattress that's one level firmer. Over time your mattress will become softer and you'll end up getting the softer feel. Once you get the mattress make sure you rotate it on a regular basis. If you buy from the Original Mattress Factory you can sign up for their mattress rotation emails which are very helpful.

I am someone whose back hurts if I sleep on a mattress that's too soft so I can understand how your husband feels. I know you asked for ways to make your mattress firmer on one side but I really think you may end up regretting that. It's easier to make one side softer using egg crates etc... Good luck!

You can try having him put plywood under his side. That way it won't "sag" very far for him.

I think you should return it tho. If he thinks its too soft, he's going to be HURTING no matter what you do. If you get one that's firmer, you can still add foam on your side.

Another thought, what about one of those mattresses that has the air chambers in it so you can each adjust your side to your comfort level. I believe they are called sleep number beds. Sounds like you may be perfect candidates for one.

Good luck

return it return it return it...if you still can! I bought a mattress less than two years ago. I have bad back problems and my mattress was too soft. It made everything so much worse that by the time we finally gave in to buy a new one i was in full on pain everyday. Some people just cant sleep on a soft mattress.

I returned our mattress because it was too soft for me, which is saying something because I love soft mattresses. The one I exchanged it for was much firmer, and I hated it also. The first one was an expensive mattress, and when I returned it for the less expensive one, they would only give me store credit for the difference. It irritated me that I spent so much extra on a mattress I hated. I ended up putting memory foam on it for year 1, then that flattened out, and I went to the 2 inch mattress pads, which are starting to wear thin. Good luck on your decision, but I wonder if you will find one that satisfies him. and you.

I would return it. Miserable sleep and pain is not worth whatever the 15% will be. As someone else suggested, you can do the plywood under one side but I would suggest getting a firmer mattress and then putting a memory foam topper on it. My husband likes a softer mattress but I am someone that hurts unless I sleep on a firm bed. We have a firm mattress but memory foam on top. I don't know how to explain it - it's soft and comfy while being supportive and firm. We both LOVE it! Every bed in our house, including our son's crib, now has memory foam on it. Our guests say their bed feels like a cloud! They sell them pretty cheap at Overstock.com. Get AT LEAST a 2" although 3" is better (1" flattens and doesn't do a whole lot). Good luck.

I tried a sleep number bed in a motel once. I didn't like it. Our mattress felt a bit hard to me, so I got a latex mattress pad that just fits on my side. We both sleep perfectly comfortably.
