Sleeping Problems - Jacksonville, FL

Okay, I have been a mom for almost 3 years now and understand that kids can put a damper on sleep habits. Fortunately, I have been blessed with two wonderful sleepers and they are not my problem.

I have had back problems for YEARS. About 7 years ago, I had back surgery for a herniated disc (can you believe I was only 24 at the time?). Lately, though I have been having trouble with night-time comfort and restlessness.

My symptoms are: stiffness in AM, exhausted in AM (after 6-8 hrs sleep), headaches by noon that go away with tylenol, want to sleep ALL the time.

My suspicions are: the matress! I have a standard spring mattress that was supposed to be designed for bad backs, but leaves me with painful pressure points every morning to where I cannot stay in bed, I have to get up. My pillow is no help either as I need more support under my neck and my pillows all just go flat and offer 0 (zero) support.

Solutions tried: Laid on a Sleep Number, but still had a pressure points issue. Multiple pillows, still make my neck sore.

Solutions looking into, but would like some input on: TempurPedic mattress (felt like I was in heaven when I laid on it once), and those curved foam pillows that offer then neck support.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, we are on a tight budget, so tips that would work with that would be even better.

Thanks Ladies and Gentlemen (I know there are some out there).

What can I do next?

I have a Therapedic pillow that's shaped just like the Tempurpedic, but costs a fraction of the price. You can get it at Linens & Things or Bed, Bath & Beyond. I may put another pillow over top to prop myself up to read, but don't sleep on anything but the one specially-shaped pillow and it's made a lot of difference for me! I can't afford Tempurpedic either and have back problems, but I traded in my old bed for a Sealy Posturpedic about 18 months ago during a sale at Mattress Firm... no springs and while not as great as a Tempurpedic, but MUCH more affordable... and a huge improvement over the old bed. I'd love to have Tempurpedic everything, but can't afford it either. Regular trips to the chiropractor are also a big help for me.

Good luck,
K.

I'd be curious what you find out. We are shopping for a new mattress and on a budget. Where would you suggest shopping?

I too have many back and neck problems. The pain was so bad that I finally consented to have an interthical pain pump implanted two years ago. I also went through the gammet of trying to find the best mattress and pillow thru the past 10 years. We bought the Sleep Number and TempurPedic and returned both. We finally bought a Sterns & Foster with a 2" built in topper and decided to keep that one about 4 years ago. HUGE amounts of money was spent trying to find the right fit for me. I finally found the best and cheapest fix last February on QVC.com. I bought their (H03227) Biopedic Visco-Elastic Memory Foam Topper with Quilted Cover. It was on sale that day and it only cost me $120 for the king size. The most expensive is not always the best believe me! When it came it was crushed into a plastic bag and I thought no way it would work. It took two of us to get it out of the bag because it was so scrunched into it. We put it on the bed and within 15 minutes it puffed into a nice 3" of pure comfort.

It took every one of my pressure points away the very first night. The first time I laid on it, before putting all of the linens back onto the bed, I knew it would work. I've had is for four months now and it looks and feels just like new. My husband has never slept better and hates to get out of bed in the morning.

I bought numerous types of pillows too, but finally I bought one from my old chiropractor. It was far better than the most expensive pillows (six that I can remember now) that I purchased at the better department/bed/linen stores. It is contoured to keep my spine in alignment. My husband tried mine and liked it so much that I bought one for him too even though he doesn't have any spine problems. Now we are so rested that we feel young again. LOL

Have you ever considered sleep apnia (sp). This is times during your sleep that you actually stop breathing for seconds at a time. Some of the big symptoms are waking up tired and with a headache. Usually those with sleep apnia also snore.

It is treatable, a coworker of mine was diagnosed and is receiving treatment and he is a totally differnt person now. He says he is thinking more clearly, has a lot more energy and is overall way more happy now that he is getting a good nights rest.

Good luck,

S.

It may not be your mattress. My husband just found out he has minor arthritis in his backand he is 27. His symptoms were the same as yours. Also, if you still want to buy a mattress my mother works at Mattress Giant. Hope this helps a little.
