Sleeping Through the Night - Buffalo Grove,IL

I know it sounds like 'another sleeping through the night question'? but my question is actually...when you read a book or something, it says infants (8 mo like my son) need to get 12 hrs night time sleep, but is that without any feeding or diaper changing? Or is it normal to change diapers or feeding for few times? Mine sleeps from 10 pm to 10 am, but he gets breastfeeding right before he goes to sleep, then btw 6-8 am and go back to sleep until 10 am. My little guy is a monster eater and seems to be always hungry. Was hoping that he wouldn't wake up for feeding once we start the solid, but it doesn't seem to help. Do your babies sleep 12 hours straight without changing or feeding? (It might be a very stupid question, but I had to ask. :) )

What can I do next?

My boy didn't go without night feedings until he was 12 months. We didn't change his diapers at night though--just put an overnight diaper on him and changed him first thing in the morning. Unless they have a bowel movement, I dont' think there is a need to change them at night, it just wakes them up more. Its very very common for infants to wake up once a night for a feed until their first birthday--sounds like he's doing great!

One thing that I learned when my daughter was an infant is that nothing is necessairly normal! Mine hardly slept despite being fed and changed and tended to in a variety of ways.

I would say that if he acts alert and happy and is eating, then the schedule that you are describing sounds just fine. :)

Sounds just like how my daughter was at that age, almost exactly. I would say that right now, 12 hours is a long time for him to go without a feeding. It will probably change though sometime between now and 12 mos of age. My daughter was sleeping for 12 hours straight by 12 mos, not before that though.

You are lucky, mine were good to do 6 hours without waking. I would say most babies do not sleep that well.

Like Abby D, my kids didn't sleep through the night until after their first birthday. One was breast fed, one was formula fed.

However, we never changed diapers in the middle of the night unless necessary. So, it was simply a matter of adjusting to feeding schedules.

Unfortunately, all kids are different, so it's hard to gauge. If he has a big appetite, my guess is you're going to be closer to the 12 month, but it's purely speculation.

Good luck!

my VERY healthy 2.5 year old has never slept 12 hours straight at night...ever....I dont think that you can make a blanket statement for any child. especially the age of your child there is a lot of teething going on so very few kids are going to sleep through that. Please dont listen to those books, they will make you insane. If your child is happy and healthy do not worry! and since you are nursing and hes teeething the nursing motion is a natural pain reliever which is why he is waking. some parents decide to parent through those moments of pain other leave their kid to cry it out. dont worry about the books do what you feel is right ! and by reading your post it sounds to me you have a great little sleeper by the way!

That's actually an interesting question! I'd never thought about subtracting short periods for diapering or nursing back to sleep, but my guess is that those wouldn't count as actual sleep time. I'm wondering how old your little guy is – your profile shows a 5-month-old cutie, but I don't know how long ago you posted that.

I count from the time they go to bed til they get up as sleep. Unless they are actively alert for an hour, I wouldn't worry.

We co-sleep, so mine sleep through feedings and diaper changes.

And I agree with other posters....the 12 hours is a guideline. I wouldn't try and count the hours.

my son is eight months and sleeps from 10 pm to 830am. He wakes up at 4 to eat and i change him while he's drinking his bottle and i always try n burp too. By the time he finishes his bottle he's asleep again but i know that if i don't change his diaper, it will be soaked at 830ish when he wakes up.

Every child is different. My first slept for 11 hours straight at 6 months. His little brother was 8 months before this happened, and many other babies of friends and relatives could only sleep for 12 hours straight, without a feeding, at one year. I think your little guy is doing pretty well, since he only needs one feeding. He could be well on his way to sleeping "through the night" without a feeding. By the way, it's not a "stupid question" at all!!

My daughter never slept 12 hours straight through with no feeding and/or changing. As she has gotten older, there are still recommended amounts of sleep for each age and I don't think she has ever slept as much as the books, experts, etc. say that she should. Some of the recommendations don't even seem realistic for school age children. With needing to get up early enough to catch a bus for school, she would need to go to bed at dinner time to get the recommended amount on a school night. I'm sure it varies for each child but my daughter was always a happy baby, rarely fussed and wasn't falling asleep during the day so I assumed she was getting enough sleep for her during the night even though it wasn't the recommended amount. If your son seems rested in the morning, I wouldn't worry about it.
