Hello Moms~

My 10 1/2 year old just started her period. I bought the "slender" pads at the store and they are still too big. Any suggestions of a brand that might work better?

Thanks :)

How about the teen tampons. Very very slender and oh so much more comfortable. I always gave my girls the option. They opted for clean and neat tampons and never looked for a pad.

Kotex has a brand that starts with a U. They sell panty liners that are tiny. You can try those.

Their entire U line is geared toward Tweens, so I believe you should find something in there that works.

My girls (all 3 of them) like Kotex ultra thin with wings. They are very lightweight. The wings allow them to pull them tighter around the panty and sort of adjust the width a little bit, (plus they help save the panty). I don't know that the University line is any smaller, just more colorful and more expensive. This is one of the few things I don't do generic on - these are definitely worth it for the younger girls. My girls started between 11 and 12, so a little older. She may still find it a little big/uncomfortable. I just remind my girls what pads were like when I started - about an inch thick and adhesive was a fairly new thing. A short discussion on the old belts and suddenly a little bit too long or wide doesn't sound so bad after all :)

I'd skip pads and go straight for the teen tampons.

I think my daughter did pads her first month and that was all it took. She does wear a maxi at night and only tampons during the day.

Congratulations on your new phase!

I agree with Patty. Skip the pads and get her to try tampons now. Pads are just awful and should be last resort. I remember when I finally discovered tampons when I was 16, I couldn't believe I'd been dealing with pads to that point.

If she or you do not want to go the Tampon route... try the "overnight" or "maxi" type panty liners. It is heavier duty than regular panty liners, but it is still thin.

I always like the small "tween" fit by Kotex. Even I use them on light days because they are much more comfortable to wear.

Not every girl is ready for tampons right out of the gate. If she is, great. If not, then look for "teen" or "tween" sizes. Always makes "slender" ultra thins and she might want to also try out Always Infinity. They do not make those ultra slim, but when she is ready for them, they are really soft.

My 16 yo daughter swears by the Kotex Tween pads. They don't sell them all over so you might have to check more than one store. We buy them at our Jewel/Osco store.

She doesn't use tampons after having toxic shock syndrome last year on June 18th. She quite literally came within minutes of not being with us and spent four days on life support due to tampons.

Not said to scare but to educate. We teach our kids to wash their hands when they finish using the restroom. It is VERY important to teach our daughters to wash their hands before inserting tampons. Any trace of any germs can be inserted with the tampon and the tampon gives a breeding ground for those germs.

My daughter is OCD (diagnosed OCD). She washes constantly. She changed her tampons regularly. She still got toxic shock. They think because she tried regular sized tampons instead of slender and the absorbency was too much for her.

Whatever the case, educate about washing hands prior to insertion, size and how long she can keep them in - it is critical.

Blessings to you and your daughter during this new transition for both of you.
