I am looking for ways to help my 12 yr old son who has ADHD and is waiting testing for Asperger's Syndrome to make social connections with peers.

What can I do next?

What is your son interested in? Since those with Asperger's Syndrome seem to be focused on the few things they really like and enjoy, it would seem that you would need to find a summer camp, or a youth organization that is involved with the same things that he is, be it cars, astronomy, music, or chemistry. If he is with a group of kids his age interested in the things that he seems to focus on, he should find a connection with them to help develope social interactions. I'm sure there's one out there.

Best wishes.

My daughter has ASp. There is a camp in Ingram Texas near Kerrville that is for aspy kids. It is called Charis Hills and has a website. There are trained in getting the kids to interact. My daughters attends a mainstream camp in kerrville for 2 weeks we just heard of Charis hills recently. My daughter attends therapy and has a therapy playgroup with kids with the same disorder. It helps with all the different quirks each child has. K.

I'd find a parallel activity that involves something he's interested in.

Parallel b/c, depending on the severity of Asperger's, sometimes kids are not pleasant or comfortable in a cooperative atmosphere. Something like karate or cubscouts, where they work alone and as part of a team might be better than something like baseball, where a moment of nonsocial behavior could result in a team loss and a label for your son.

HI S.!
I work with children that have autism and attended the state conference last year. I was extremely impressed with a woman named Michelle Garcia Winner. She has a clinic in CA and specializes in social skills for all people, but most especially those with Asperger's Syndrome. Go to her website and hopefully she has some great resources for you to check out. It is http://www.socialthinking.com/
Take care,
