Software for Preschooler

Can you recommend a good software (disk) I can buy for my preschooler to use on the computer? We have a couple of Clifford ones (a music one and an alphabet one) but I'd like to find a good phonics one. He is only 3 but is starting to be able to use our trackball mouse pretty well.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

THANK YOU for all of your responses both on and off of the board. I know there are a a lot of great free sites online, but a relative gave him an amazon.com gift certificate for xmas so I wanted to purchse software with it. My older kids used Jump Start and Reader Rabbit when they were little but I was wondering if there was anything newer/better now. I went ahead and ordered a bundle that included both Reader Rabbit AND Jump Start. Thanks again!
***Update... my son and I both like Reader Rabbit so much better than Jump Start

We really like the Jump Start software, they have it for preschool, toddler time, and grades K-4. I have found them at wal mart, best buy, kmart and target. The other thing my daughter really enjoyed daily was Disney PreSchool time online. We paid for membership a year in advance so it broke down much cheaper than a month to month subscription. With the Disney Preschool time online the games and activities are not only learning fun, but they adjust themselves to the level of the child playing accoding to how well they are doing. If the activity is more advanced than the child it will make it easier, if too easy it will become more difficult. They always succeed, but they work at it and have fun. We used this for two years until my daughter started school. They will give you a seven day free trial to see if you like it, just go to disney.com

www.sesamestreet.ordg has great games online for free! He'll love the choices- simple from letter identification, to more difficult (for a 3 yr old :) with simple words using phonics, matching by color or shape, counting... My 2 1/2 year old LOVES it! He usues my laptop so still needs a little help- but it's a super 'together' activity where he is learning & having a blast!

Reader Rabbit. It is the program our local library uses, and my 2 year old loves it. There are different levels so it's great for growing with the preschooler. I see many preschoolers ages 2-5 playing with this program. Good luck

Instead of software, you might look into online things you can us. For example, Starfall. Starfall is the curiculum that is used in many private schools. I beleive that it is used in public schools too, but in a different way. There are several online ways to teach phonics! Even look into Disney.com.

Hi Tami,
I have been a professional nanny for 18 years and of course in addition to love and affection, my other goal is to give children great tools for learning and development.
I have used these in the past with much success and continue to suggest them to my clients.
Reader Rabbit Series- they come in all age ranges and even types (ie, math, reading, etc) Put the word reader rabbit cd rom in google search and sites that sell them will come up. They are usually cheap, like 7 or 8 dollars......
Another series I like, but I do not remember how many selections they have is called Jumpstart- I used the preschool the most-but very effective as well.
I hope this helps!!!!

Hi Tammi,

I love - love - love www.schoolzone.com

You can buy it at Wal-Mart, Walgreens and online.
Some are workbooks only. Some are workbooks with a software.

At the stores they mostly sell for younger ages. If you want it for an older child you will need to go online.

If you go to the website you can see all of the wonderful things they have.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a website to buy some learning material for your older children. I have bought many items from this company and my whole family loves the way they teach. They teach through fun songs.
It is www.twinsisters.com
When you get on the site look to your left, look under songs that teach.

You know that my two oldest children attend CA. My 9 year old daughter uses and loves the multiplication and division workbooks with music CD's.
I was able to download the music CD into my iPhone.
Yea, music math on the go.

Take care. = )
Happy Learning.

My son just loves the Jumpstart series. We have a few of them. The good thing is it starts at their level and progresses as they do with more challenging work. Just be careful when you buy them though and make sure it is the stand-alone game. I purchased one a while back that only let you get through 2 units before it wanted you to have a subscription to get the rest.
