Son's Fever Won't Break

Hey Ladies. My 1 year old has had a temperature of 100.4 since Mon afternoon. I was thinking he is teething at first but his temperature won’t break (it goes down a little with Tylenol but goes back to 100). He is still playing but not as much. He is wanting to be held more and has been sucking his thumb (usually he only sucks his thumb when he’s hungry or tired). He doesn’t have runny nose, no throwing up, etc. I’m waiting on his Dr’s office to open to call and get their opinion. I’m only concerned since his fever won’t break, although I know that’s not really high for babies. He didn't get fevers when his other teeth were coming in. Does this just sound like teething to you?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Ladies! I called the Dr as soon as they opened and they aren't concerned. They think it's either a virus or teething. Hopefully it passes by Christmas so he can enjoy it! In the mean time I'll enjoy him wanting to cuddle!

Merry Christmas!

There's alot of viral fever bugs going around. If that's what it is, it just has to run it's course. Keep him hydrated, it doesn't matter if he eats as long as he drinks.

Oh yeah, I saw some say take rectal temp. Unless your doc has told you to do this and has taught you how to do it, you SHOULD NOT be doing this. Most doctors DO NOT advise this unless you know (meaning your in the medical field) or they have advised you to do this because you can cause severe damage to them. Sorry to rant about this, but I see people saying they're doing rectal temps all the time and it drives me crazy. I was an OB nurse so I knew how to do them and I still didn't do them on my own kids.

My daughter always ran fever and had a runny nose when she had a tooth coming in. The doctor's are going to tell you that those things shouldn't happen with teeth, and are going to tell you to come in. It's probably going to be nothing, but I think you are on the right track with calling the doctor.

Our pediatrician didn't want to see us unless the temp was at least 104 or there were other symptoms (throwing up, diarrhea, ear pain, etc).
There were times when my son would spike a temp of 102 (he'd be acting fine, eating fine, playing fine) and the temp would be normal 30 min later without doing anything.
I'd keep an eye on him and look for emerging symptoms, but 100 is not very high.

Could be teething but also could be he's fighting something off. At 100 I wouldnt worry about the fever, I wouldn't necessarily give tylenol either unless the child was totally miserable. Call the doctor when they open and take him in to be safe but It doesn't sound serious it hasn't been that long and in that time he hasn't gotten worse.

It isn't that high but it isn't normal to continue to run a fever. His body is definately fighting something. Since it isn't high, it may just mean his body is fighting it sufficiently.

Watch him and try to wait it out unless other symptoms develop. It could be the starting of an ear infection or strep (my kids didn't always show symptoms with either one).

When my daughter was that age a fever always meant ear infection. Just a thought...hope he gets better soon.

If you are taking a rectal temp (which you should be for a 1 year old) a temp of 100.4 is not a fever it is in the normal range it is also in the normal range for an ear temp.
He is probably getting teeth some hurt more then others causing babies to want to be held more plus its only been a day and a half.
