My son is 18 months old and ever since he was born he has had eczma. We have tried at least a million different prescribed creams, nothing has worked. Any suggestions on something natural? We have changed detergents...rulled out food...everything under the sun. Will try anything!!!!

What can I do next?

Hi L.,

I see that you've gotten a bunch of responses and your head must be spinning. I worked extensively with children who have eczema for a few years, I also have had bouts of eczema myself. The bottom line is that eczema starts in the gut which is why creams don't completely address the problem as the gut needs to be treated as that is the source of the problem. My question to you is did you take antibiotics while you were pregnant? A certain percentage of babies with eczema have Candida overgrowth as a result of antibiotics, or sometimes they can catch it if you had a Candida overgrowth (you may not even know if you do). The best all natural product on the market to treat Candida is Threelac (no I am not selling it). It is a delicious tasting lemon powder that kids love, you can just sprinkle it on his tongue or put in a drink or i applesauce. He would only need one packet a day split into two or three doses, you should see immediate (within 24 hrs) results. If it doesn't work you can return the product with in 30 days for a full refund. And if he doesn't actually have Candida, the product can't hurt him. The company is called GHT and the # is 800-305-5710. If you decide you want to try it I can get you a discount as I already paid the fee to get it wholesale and you can use my number if you'd like. Best to you, M.

Hi L.,

When you have a moment, some things that you might want to consider. 1. The detergents you use might be affecting the eczema. 2. Household products that you use may be affecting the eczema and 3. depending on what creams, lotions and or prescriptions you are using, that may not be affective. My niece who's 2 years old, had eczema to the point where it was bleeding. I then discovered Renew lotion and we have used that on her for the past 2 months her skin is smooth and pretty....so take a look at this link

I too had the same problem with my son. There was nothing that would help with his eczema. Sometimes it would get really bad in areas on his arm(s). Then I'd use hydrocortisone (low dose). But only when it got really bad. It would clear it up. I would ask your pediatrician first before using it. My son only seemed to get it when it was cold weather and dry. He is 20 months now and has outgrown it, thankfully. Your son should too, hopefully.

My son does not have eczema but had a very bad rash for awhile that WASN'T clearing up with any creams/prescriptions/etc... FINALLY, a pediatrician suggested I use Lotrimin AF and within 2 days it was TOTALLY GONE AND NEVER CAME BACK... It was my miracle.. Have you tried that yet? It's an antifungal cream that I bought at Publix.....

I am interested to hear what you find out because we are in the same situation. My son has had eczma since birth and I tried every cream under the sun and still nothing has cleared up. We are using a acid cream cream 2 times a day and the doctor said it would take 6mths to a year to clear up but its been 6mths and no signs of it clearing up.

you say you tried diet, etc
personally I would try to find the underlying cause and then treat it
sounds like maybe a food allergy-
I'm not sure when they can accurately test for allergies
but it's worth a shot
I would ask for a referral (if you need one) to a pediatric allergist...
could be milk proteins, soy proteins, corn, wheat, nuts, any number of things...

I know that you say you have ruled out food allergies, but have you tried totally eliminating corn products ? I have a viscious form of eczema (dishydrotic) that blisters and makes my skin crack and I have found that corn is a terrible trigger. ALSO, I am now using Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula with Vitamin E lotion (fragrance free). You can buy it at Walmart for about $5 for the pump bottle. I tried it once on the recommendation of a friend and now have several bottles all over the house because it works so well. The key to keeping eczema under control is moisturizing all the time. Also, make sure you are using an unscented soap as the bath soaps can be very very irritating. Try something in the aveeno baby line or even a cocoa butter based soap. Hope that helps!

My daughter has eczma too. But, we keep it under control by not using and of the "baby" soaps and lotions. We use Cetephil lotion and a non comodegenic soap for bath time. The soap is made by Huggies and is in a blue bottle but it's hard to find. It's hypoallergenic and has no scent. Very mild. I'm sure any type of soap meant for babies with eczma will help. Certainly try the Cetephil lotion...works GREAT. I even use it and noticed my skin becoming less irritable.

Okay now we have to talk..You may be able to pull up my old answers on this site when you type in ecezma etc. under L. L. that's me. My story-- same as yours--but there are some possible differences-- turns out that at 17 months we had insisted on having him tested for food allergies--turns out I was right-- he was highly allergic - though we never gave him peanuts-- his count very high as far as being allergic- epic pen- type- also allergic to soy--- mild reaction to wheat-- allergic to eggs-- milk so let me tell you what its been like--------- H E double L !! When he was diagnosed by an allergist-- we changed his diet and though he has ecezma it is mild compared to moderate and at times severe! If you want more advice please don't hesitate to call me- I am putting a natural oil (smells like garlic) ugh- on him after his bath etc.. I would be happy to share this information - I too am a teacher -home for the summer. Baby boy Ryan turned two years old on May 4th. Call me ###-###-#### L.

My son & nephew have it too. Thankfully my son is responding to the prescription from the dr. My nephew didn't though and my sister has been using Emu oil and it's worked. It's expensive but worth it for my nephew. You can get it at natural food stores and some spas sell it. Or you can get it online.

I have 2 boys (8 and 3) that both have eczema. The baby has it really bad, and has since birth. My older son now only has it around his mouth which is made worse by his licking his mouth constantly. We, too, have tried all the prescriptions. I have found 2 that work really well. The first one was locoid. However, it stopped working for him after about 6 months. We now use traimcinolone which is amazing. My 3 yr old's goes from his feet to his knees. Around the ankles is absolutely awful. He hates when I put it on, but I try to when he is sleeping. Even one dose makes a huge difference by morning. If his eczema is mild, I used aquaphor for my older one which kept it under control. He never had to use a rx. I have also used Noxema. I know this sounds weird, but I read it in our local paper and it really did work. If the skin is broken (from scratching) I would not use the noxema though. My 8 yr old said it burned a little but it did clear it up. Ivory soap is what the dr told us to use. I also use the aquaphor baby wash and aveeno baby wash. There are also packets of aveeno baby calming bath. I use that when it gets really bad.

L.,

I have a nine year old niece that had bad eczema almost since the moment of birth. I can't remember all the details, but I know two important things:

1. She had/has several food allergies. I know two of them are peanuts and shellfish. She can't even eat food that has been touched by a utensil that has touched either one. This makes eating out tricky.

2. All of her clothing had to be 100% cotton, or they irritated her skin. This is harder than it sounds. Many states require small children's pajamas to be fire retardant, and 100% cotton is not. The whole family was always on the lookout for cotton clothes for her, because pure cotton is so hard to find. All clothing had to be washed before it could be used, including towels, etc, because all new clothing is laced with various kinds of chemicals.

Her skin looks great now, unless she comes into contact with a food that she is allergic to. If you want me to find out more, just send me a message and let me know. I would be glad to.

Ruling out allergies is can be a long process, but I would definitely take him to an allergist and start. Allergies-esp food, are most common seen with skin problems.
While you are doing that, just try to keep everything as mild as possible--no scents, dye free, scent free laundry detergents (like All free and clear), no fabric softener (don't forget towels too) and if he gets a bath every night, cut back the cleaners so that you are only using them every other day or so....and don't dump them in his bath water, just put a small amount on the wash cloth.
I've been using Gentle Naturals baby eczema cream on my son and that seems to be helping more than anything else I've tried, but he only has mild case of dermatitis. I've also just recently switched his wash to Aquaphor gentle Wash for Dry Sensitive skin --both I got at Babys R us.
Good luck! I hope you and your son find relief soon!
