My daughter seems to have a diaper rash but there is very very little there- there was a faint pink inside the crevice & near the ring- nurse prac said it is a mild mild case of diaper rash, but after a week of open air and creams and bathing in baking soda, it's visibly gone but her butt is still driving her nuts and making her cry a LOT. Also have been keeping her mostly prone... at my wits end and feel so bad for her.... anyone have anything similar??

I am a dermatology PA and a mom whose little girl was prone to diaper rash. Get triple paste cream and cornstarch. Coat her buttocks like you are frosting a cake with the triple paste and sprinkle a little bit of cornstarch. Once better always use Vaseline or aquaphor with every diaper change for prevention. It could be made worse due to a food sensitivity. Any other skin issues?
what kind of diapers are you using? My babies tended to get more rashes with huggies. We never had any problems with Luvs though. Also found that Aquafor was the best defense against the wetness. Its a water based jelly for skin and it works great. YOu should be able to find it anywhere. Good luck
A few thoughts:
- A diaper rash is usually fungal...and yeast is by definition fungal. Especially with girls, even a mild diaper rash can trigger a yeast infection. Ditto using modern day baby powder (it's corn starch these days -sugar- instead of the talc that it used to be). My son was prone to yeast infections...oy...bleeding painful things. One of the things we were told to do was to never ever ever use baby powder on him.
- Our son turned out to be allergic to baby wipes. The more "hypoallergenic" and "gentle" they were supposed to be, the worse it was. We found out on accident...ran out of wipes...broke...used wet paper towels until we got paid...bought wipes...misery returned...quit wipes...misery went away...tried wipes one more time...misery back...wipes in the garbage. The upside to damp paper towels is 2 fold: 1) Waaaay cheaper than wipes. 2) You can use warm water! :) Can't beat that!

Try aquaphor or domoboro. That are both really good.
my daughter gets a lot of diaper rashes and it took about a year to realize that she was allergic to the diapers. so what we did was started buying chlorine free diapers and it is working for us. so maybe try that. good luck!
A.. I have no medical expertise, but I would say try a few of the other common creams. I would start with an anti-fungal, like a lotrimin gel for athletes foot. and you might try something like gynacort for a yeast infection. fungal skin infections often do not show anything other than a slight redness. doctors never "see" it but it is miserable, and often worst at night. if something seems to be working use it for a full week after all symptoms disappear. i would go with a the anti-fungal footcare cream or gel first, use it for a few days, and if she is better, use it another week, once a day. I don't know if a baby can have internal discomfort around the anus ( like hemorrhoids on older people). Maybe you could ask the nurse about it.
Pure, virgin, organic coconut oil will clear up 99% of rashes. It is amazing stuff.. even if it is a yeast infection, coconut oil kills it. It is all natural and perfectly safe. :)
I would think that it is a case of yeast or an allergy. You don't talk about how she is being fed, breastmilk or formula so look into removing sugars, potatoes, etc. from your diet. If you are doing formula, switch to something that is not dairy or soy.

I remember being astonished when my doctor told me that my daughter's persistant "rash" was actually a yeast infection. Take her back to the dr. so he can rule anything like that out. Also, if she's had diarrhea, it might be irritated skin from all the acids.

Had similar issues with my super sensitive second little girl...
try a little apple cider vinegar in the bath- smells terrible, but great for the skin issues (opposite of the baking soda effect with the ph- sometimes we alternate). Also just a little witch hazel on a cotton ball to wipe the area. The witch hazel sometimes tingles a bit on application, but then helps a ton- my 5 yr old now asks for it if she has any irritation and knows it helps. Hope that helps you!
Also... we switched to cloth diapers after continuous battles with returning rashes- it's pretty easy once you get used to it.
The diapers were our problem too. We switched to a chlorine free dye free diaper. seventh generation totally worked.
My youngest son has super sensitive skin and my daughter is looking like she does too along with myself. This led to all sorts of issues.
What brand of diapers are you using? Anything scented, like Pampers can cause irritation. The fragrance is the problem. This goes for baby wipes as well. We are as fragrance free in our house as possible due to irritation, as well as asthma and allergies to the smells themselves. We use Huggies and have never had issues with them. We use Costco's Kirkland brand baby wipes and don't have issues with those.
Triple Paste diaper rash cream is the best! Both my son & daughter got diaper rashes that bled in their first few weeks of life and this cleared them up right away and kept them away. My ped recommended it with my son and we kept it around ever since. It would literally show up from one diaper to the next. Any time we see even a little pink we put it on. When the rash was at it's worse I would use wet washcloths in place of the wipes to get the bleeding to end.
Someone already asked, but how is she fed? If you're breastfeeding things you eat can cause irritation. Certain types of formula can cause irritation as well.
Make sure you're changing her diaper often to keep things dry as well.
My daughter is 10 1/2 wks old now and hasn't had any diaper rash issues since her first couple weeks. We're super diligent now.
maybe this will help over the long run. i always wash the butt and vagina area with water after poops and then let it air out. i also use a product that has grape seed oil in it which really really helps with diaper rash and preventing it (if you want the name, contact me and i can tell you). i also use A&D ointment at night with a night diaper to create a seal between the diaper/urine and the skin.
as far as the anus bothering her, i would definitely contact the pediatrician again and maybe go in for another follow up.....
A and D Ointment works wonderfully, use after each diaper change.

We found that aquaphor was the best thing for diaper rash. It worked like a charm for both of our kids. It's a bit expensive at the drugstore, but well worth it! You can also find it at costco (ask for it -- it's behind the counter at the pharmacy at ours). Good luck!
