HELP!!!! My three month old daughter spitsup like CRAZY. I am at the point of loosing my mind but since I know I can't I just want too cry. She is gaining weight and is a very healthy and happy baby so I am not concerned about that. She sees a GI and he is not concerned at all but my sanity is at stake here. I feel really bad because no one ever wants to hold her because you are going to get a whole lot of spit up on you if you do. I am trying to come to grips with the fact that I am just always going to smell like baby vomit. Does this ever end? I just want to be able to play with my child without having to stop to clean up spit up. Now she is starting to roll over from her back to her stomach which makes her, you guessed it, spit up so I am on constant allert to make sure she does not put her face in it. Even my two year old tells me when she spits up. To make matters worse the GI tells me that it has not even peeked yet. He says that between 4 and six months is when the spit up peeks. How coukd this child possibly spiy up more than she already does. I have tried putting cereal in her bottle but that does nothing. Sitting her up after she eats does nothing. I tell people that I have accepted it but I really haven't. She will eat 5oz at every feeding and probably spits up about 3 oz between every feeding.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the encouraging words. My first daughter was the same way and I think she stopped around six months so I am hopping my second will be the same. The only thing that makes me nervous is she is rolling over now and the preasure on her stomach makes her spit up more and then she puts her face in it if I don't get to it in time. She is not a supported sitter yet so I really don't have anywhere to put her without holding her all the time. She loves to be on the floor so she can move around but I am on edge. I know this will pass and I keep telling myself that everyday. She really is a delight to be around and is a very happy baby.

I hear ya. My first son was like that. I almost resented him because we both were always a mess. He was a summer baby and I wore only sleeveless shirts. Still didnt help, I would be soaked and stinky by 10am. I counted 81 separate episodes of spit up one day. (A friend thought I was overexaggerating, so I counted). It does feel like it goes on forever with no end in sight. Every milestone the Drs. said it should get better. Once he is sitting up, once he starts solids (thats when it gets really bad!) once he is standing and walking. Trying to recall when it stopped, he is 7 now, and I cant remember! Its like a painful rite of passage that once its over, you forget. I know that doesnt help right now and I completely understand how no one wants to hold her. We had every piece of furniture covered with blankets, including our guests when they would "offer" to hold him. I would talk to the GI Dr. about the effects of it on her esophagus. My Gi Dr. finally did a scope (after I told him the actual number of times a day, he realized that it was extreme spit up) and his lining was shredded from the constant spit up even with the Pepcid and, at the time, highly overpriced, Prevacid. Hang in there. Disappointingly, the best I can offer is my understanding and the infamous words, "this too shall pass".

Our DS was a spitter upper. We called it decorating. Oh look, DS has decorated mommy's shirt. I guess it must have looked too plain. Glad to hear you've got a GI in the mix. Good luck to you and your lovely daughter.

Oh M., I have SO been there! Both my boys were that way. I could barely keep them in clean clothing because as soon as I changed them .... BLAAAAAHHHH! Prevacid helped us only in that it was less uncomfortable for my son but it didn't stop him from spitting up. I learned quickly not to wear anything I really liked because I would inevitably have to get rid of it (most spit up stains wouldn't completely come out). Part of holding a baby is possibly getting spit up on. If people don't want to hold her - their loss! You could put a baby blanket over the them - burp clothes weren't big enough for us, we needed whole baby blankets. Hang in there, it does end! Sending hugs!

My youngest did that. You always have to hold them facing away from you. As long as she's gaining weight I wouldnt worry about it. She's just a bomb. That's what we called our son. No one wanted to hold him.

I had the same problem with both of my children, both breastfed till 18months. My first had issues when supplementing with formula. She simply couldn't tolerate it, to the point almost everything came up. She was fed just enough of the formula to get her weight up and then I stuck to breast feeding. I had to be very careful about what I ate and I also took pro-biotic supplements. Adding pro-biotics can be very helpful aiding in digestion. After taking the supplements my daughter was fine. My son seemed to spit up until he was walking. It just depends on the child. It was helpful to give him other things to drink but then it was considered harmful to give your children water in addition to b-milk or formula. It will get better with time but I would definitely check out a health food store for acidophilus there are several formulated for children that can be to added to a bottle.

Good Luck!

Hi M., my son did that until he was about 10 months old. Spitting up about 4-6 times a day, at random times. Yes, you get tired of changing your clothes and give up and resign yourself that you will smell like that. I'm sorry you are going through it too. I hope your situation will improve sooner. Take care.

Is it actual milk coming up or slimy mucus? Is the milk sour when it comes up? My baby went through a period of spitting up at about 4-5 months. The doctor called it acid reflux and prescribed meds, but that was not the case. 1. He was spitting up mucus, which is good. 2. He was spitting when he had an over-abundance of foremilk (nursing) and not enough hind milk. I had to work at nursing him right and pumping right to change that balance. (After being really frustrated after a middle of the night feeding, I got up and grabbed my laptop and googled some stuff. He did most of his spitting after drinking my milk, from either breast or bottle.) 3. A lactation consultant suggested that I burp him before feeding. Some babies are just gassier than others.

my son did this for 14 months.. it got gradually better and then it stopped. .he was healthy.. happy gaining weight. luckily he was breastfed so the spit up didnt stain. we tried zantac, and prevacid and it did not help. he outgrew it. prevacid was like $50 a month so we only bought 1 month of it. it didnt reduce the spit up.. so there was no use paying for it.

this will stop.. some day her tummy will grow up and she wont spit up.. hang in there.

My daughter did it to, espescialy when she was in the car. She would get motion sickness everytime I put her in the car. When I was home, I always made sure she was sitting up or when she slept on her side. I was afraid she could choke. The car sickness is still to this day. :(
