Stair Friendly Vacuum Needed!

My vacuum has officially bit the dust-no pun intended! I would love to find a new one that is more user friendly. I have seen them with attachments that make cleaning the stairs easier, but can't remember who made it. If you have a vacuum that you love, I would love to hear about it. I have read through most of the other postings on vacuums, but have not seen any mention of stairs. I really appreciate your help!
Thanks.

My vacuum died two weeks ago, too. Very sad. I was going to get the Dyson, but I started reading the Amazon.com reviews more closely and got concerned about quality, and how long it would really last. It is, after all, a plastic vacuum cleaner just like Hoover and Dirt Devil, just with better technology inside.

I ended up buying a Miele, and have been really happy. I can do my stairs with very little effort. I can use the actual powered brush on the stairs and not the stair tool, because the whole thing is so light and the hose is so long. It only weighs 17 pounds, and is pretty darn quiet (I can hear music and the phone). No smell, either. Amazing filtration, and it will last forever! I can vacuum the fan blades easily. The one thing that I wish were easier are the blinds, but I think I might just need a bigger dusting attachment. It does a good job on hard floors too, which they all say they do, but they don't all actually do...

Okay, it's more expensive, but if it really lasts for even half what they say (20 years), then it's cheaper than the plastic vacuums.

Good luck.

Hi A.,

I have 3 children myself, 13,12 and 9 but no stairs. I do however own and run my own house cleaning service with lots of stairs, 2 of which are spirals. I use many different kinds of vacuums each day. The one that works best on stairs, that I have found is the Dirt Devil Power Reach hand held vacuum, I liked it so much that I purchased one for my business and don't use any of my customer's hand helds anymore.

Hope this helps

I'm also a mother of four and as rare as it is nowadays, I do my own house cleaning. I only know one other person as hard on a vacuum cleaner as I am and her husband refers to her as a "psycho clean". I use my vacuum daily to the point it feels like another person standing in the house- I've actually named it.

I've been through so many vacuums because I run them into the ground! For me, a good vacuum is all about the convenience of the attachments. I'll tell you that the best vacuum out there is a Dyson. I've had mine for 3 years and have never had any trouble. You can get all kinds of models and buy them everywhere. If you use a 20% off one item coupon from Bed Bath and Beyond, you can save a TON of money. They run about $400 but they are worth every penny!

I planned to use my old vacuum upstairs so I didn't have to haul a one up and down, but when I used that old vacuum for the first time, I was amazed at the difference. I could smell the dust blowing out of that hunk of junk and I'd never been able to smell it before (I guess I was just used to it). Needless to say, I take the Dyson upstairs to clean up there (and it is very light and easy to move).

Everything about the Dyson is easy and very sturdy. The hose attachment IS part of the handle and it stretches very far. I can get it over half way up my stair case (which is 16 steep, curved stairs) with the vacuum still on the first floor.

I tell you, I love that thing! My vacuum is a dear friend! Have I sold you on it yet?

Good luck in your searching!

P.S. Her (the vacuum) name is Lady Dy

Check out the Oreck - expensive but well worth it. I have 3 - mine, my Aunt's (she died in 1990) and my Mother's (she died in 2002) - they can be serviced if they break.

I agree with everyone else. We bought a Dyson and I loved it so much, I insisted on buying another one for our upstairs.
It is awkward vacuuming the stairs with a Dyson. The hose is not long enough to reach the length of the stairs, and the vacuum is too bulky to prop on a stair step. I will vacuum half-way up with the downstairs vacuum; then use the upstairs vacuum and go half-way down. Before I had both, I would simply lug the vacuum cleaner from one floor to the other.
We do have two different models of Dysons. Because of the deal we found, we ended up with The Animal model upstairs. This one does produce static shock which pops my hand from time to time. I guess it is inherent with the design required to pick up the animal hair. I have researched the internet and found this to be a common problem with that particular model. So if you consider a Dyson, you might want to avoid the Animal.

We have a Dyson. Get the one with the longest hose and cord( I think they have different lengths.) IT's great for stairs. I have the allergy one, which has an attachment to clean the mattresses and mini blinds.

When I vacuumed before I could smell the stinky dust blowing back out of the vaccum. My Dyson has no smell whatseoever. And even after the floor looked perfectly clean we went back again and got even more dirt out. It was embaressing how dirty my floor was and I didn't even know it. The Dyson cleaned every bit as well as those vacuums that cost thousands (you know the kind..)

Dyson!!! We have the yellow one. We have had it for like 4 years. Now they have several moddles- but the hose comes out of the handel and is long enough that you can leave the vacume base on the floor and take just the hose up an entire flight of stairs.
