Starting My Son Early in Kindergarten???

My son turned 4 on Sept. 9th. So, it will be 2 years before he starts kindergarten. I know I am his mother and therefore biased, but he is very intelligent and loves learning. He is also as big as an average 6 year old (he's big). Does anyone have experience with starting kids early in kindergarten? What are the pros and cons? We are in the Mansfield ISD. Where do I even begin to start trying? Would he have to start in private school, or do public schools have away of going around the system? TIA!

Steph

My daughter has the exact same birthday and I went through the exact same feelings. I couldn't find a way around it, I ended up putting her in a good preschool, and now, in 3rd grade she is doing great. Really, like I said, I get it, but just decide to enjoy the extra year and know that the extra time will allow him to be a stronger student and a leader. And think about the fact that he will be a little older when he goes off to college and all those other milestones. As much as I struggled with it on the front end, I haven't regretted it at all since then.

I would say wait to start until he is the right age...I agree with starting him at a pre school or something and even with a lot of the pre schools they follow the MISD calendar, and birthdate cut off, they are great and do get them ready for Kindergarten. My oldest started this year and he is big for his age and 5.5 when school started and has been going to
Pre school since he was 3 and it has been a HUGE adjustment for him...there are definite reasons they make you wait until they are 5 to start. Check out the pre schools in Mansfield mine go to Little Learners at the First Baptist Church they have 2,3,5 day programs...First Faith at the Methodist Church is another good one, not sure there are any openings but you could always check! Good luck!

Texas rules for kindergarten are set. You can't start early. You can send him to Montessori academy or a private preschool to work on school readiness. Social skills and emotional development are just as important as smarts. Mansfield ISD kindergarten is way ahead academically. The 1st month in school they have spelling tests and math homework. Grand Prairie ISD we are just working on learning to write our name, letters and numbers 1-10. Mansfield ISD expects kids to show up able to write thier whole name, recognize letters, the sounds they make, and be able to take a 20 word spelling test once a week. Keep those requirements in mind. You don't want him to be underwater academically and socially immature.

You would have to go put him in private school that's what my friend did and then in first moved her to public school. I wish I could have started my son early and he in a Jan. baby. When he started kindergarten he was reading at a 1st grade lvl. And now that he's in 7th grade part of me wishes we would have been able to start him early. To me it all depends on the child. If you think he's ready start him in pravate school and see how he does. They will let you know if he's not ready to move forward after that.

Good luck and God Bless!
