Still Bleeding After Childbirth?

I am 7 weeks (exactly) post-partum. I stopped bleeding completely about 3 weeks after delivery. I breastfeed about 3 times per week and pump and bottlefeed breastmilk for all other feedings (about 10 times per day.) When I breastfeed I bleed a small amount vaginally afterwards. Is this still okay even at 7 weeks? (It doesn't happen when I pump.)

What can I do next?

Hi J.,

I would think this is probably ok as long as it isn't a concerning amount (soaking a liner for example). When you breastfeed, it causes uterine contractions which help the uterus to return to its original size. It would make sense that those contractions also help to expel any remaining afterbirth.

Of course, a quick call to your ob or midwive can help to put your mind at ease also - they will be more qualified to answer based on their knowledge of you and your ob history.

Congrats on your new little one!!

I was still bleeding at my 6-week check. I think that I bled on and off until about 10 week post partum....

I would check with your doctor, but one of the things that breastfeeding does is help contract your uterus back to it's normal size. This was explained to me by my doctor because when my daughter nursed, I had cramps so bad I felt like I was having contractions.
I never pumped, so I can't answer for that part.

Also, there is a difference between bleeding and hemorrhaging.
Your body is still getting adjusted to the miracle it's been through over the last 47 weeks.

Just call your OB's office and ask them, but I think it's more normal than not.

Best wishes and congratulations on your baby!

Well Oxytocin is responsbile for the cuddle/feel good emotions we get when cuddling the baby, milk let down and Uterine contractions. That horromone is a part of breastfeeding and strongly activated my human touch so it makes sense that you might see that when breastfeeding vs pumping. What did your doctor say at the post partum check?
You can always ask, but knowing how the hormone works it makes sense to me.
I will tell you that they would seem a bit heavier in terms of a cramp or bleeding right after breastfeeding during my first 6 weeks or so. I bleed heavy for 3-4 weeks and was still spotting at my 6 week check

I will be 8 weeks post partum on Tuesday and I actually stopped bleeding/spotting anything at about 4 weeks and there was literally nothing there for about 3 weeks and then just yesterday I started spotting. I was a bit more today but again just spotting. I too am breastfeeding and pumping but I dont notice a difference from one or the other in terms of bleeding. I had uterine contractions at the beginning but nothing now
Good Luck and Congrats

With my last baby, I bled for over two months off and on and was told that was completely normal. I don't know why it would happen when you breastfeed and not when you pump. I would call my doctor and ask, if I were you.
