Stitches in a 4 Yr. Old Face - How Best to Avoid a Scar?

Great advice already...one more story. A young lady we know had a fall when she was about 3, cut her forehead wide open, had stitches (not done by a plastic surgeon); I don't think her parents did anything special, but over the years she "outgrew" her scar and you can barely see it. Mederma is good (after initial healing); definitely be zealous with the sunscreen; I'd probably use pure zinc oxide. It comes in colors now, so your son should love it!

I was attacked outside of a bar and had to have eight stitches above my eye. The doctor who put in stitches kind of left a lump of skin above my eye once the stitches came out. I used dermalmd scar serum for a couple of weeks, and you can barely see the scar, and the skin bump is completely gone.

Even if it scars in a few years you won't see it. My son had 27 stitches in his face from a dog bite that cut down thru his eyebrow and and along the bone below the eyebrow. WE were very lucky that he did not loose his eye. That was aobut 9 years ago now he was 10 at the time and nowdays you can not even see the scar unless you ar looking for it. People who did not know him then have no idea unless he say's something. even the slight diffenece in the shape of his eyebrow just looks like his eyebrow hair is a little shorter there. Over time the scar will just fade to a thin white line and you won't notice it. The dr is right keep sunscreen a good one on it at all times. Banana Boat or tropicana both make a face stick that goes on like chapstick is clear waxy based so it does not run or sweat off quickly, just reapply it frequently.

What a lil trooper you have there! I would recommend tea tree oil. With the scar being above his eye you would want to use a topical gel or cream that has the oil in it so that it doesn't drip into and irritate his eye. HTH

Wow, what a great little man you have there! I know the last time I had stitches, I was not giggling :)

About a month after my youngest turned 2, she slid across a gravel driveway on her face. She scraped up her left cheek from her chin almost to her eye. It was horrible! We used a generic version of Mederma for kids on it after the scab came off. It worked great! You can hardly tell that it happened (of course, I can see it, but unless you know it happened you can't tell). We always use sunscreen, but I did use a higher spf after her accident to protect the scar tissue.

'he even giggled while they were putting in the stitches'... OMG! what a tough little guy! i had THREE stitches in my finger, first time ever, when i was 24, and cried until i passed out. unreal. youve got one tough kid! kind of makes me ashamed of myself, lol...

ANYWAY my youngest brother was hit in the face with a golfclub when he was about 7 (the club went all the way through his cheek)... now hes 18 and you can barely tell he has any scar at all, it just looks like a dimple when he smiles. he was extremely diligent with the neosporin while it was healing, then used mederma 2x a day after the stitches came out, then used spf 50 or higher for years and years and years on it after that, even in the winter. good luck, and even if there is a teeny scar, just tell you son that thats what the ladies like!!
