Storing Dirty Cloth Diapers

Hi moms. I switched to cloth diapers about a month ago, and all is going well except for storing the dirties. I use a mix of pre-folds and bumGenius diapers. bumGenius says to store the dirty diapers dry in an open container.

I've been washing the diapers every 2-3 days to prevent the smell, but no matter how frequently I wash them, I fear that my house is going to start picking up the stink and my guests will wonder why it smells like a zoo. I also don't want to over wash them because it causes them to wear out faster.

Are any of you using cloth diapers? How do you store them in between washings? Also, do you wash them with other things such as clothes or underwear? (I never have enough dirty diapers to do a full load, so I've been washing diapers and underwear together, but I don't know if this is common or if people think it's gross to mix diapers with other clothing).

What can I do next?

Hi B.! It's nice to see another cloth Mommy on here! The diapers I use don't require dry storage, so I can't help you there, but I'll share my diaper method with you. We use a microfleece insert and a cotton diaper and covers from cottonbabies.com. For all of it we store them in a covered bin half filled with cold water and a cup of vinegar. When we wash, we wash them by themselves using the small load setting on hot and use free & clear detergent and 1/2 cup baking soda. We don't seem to have any odor problems at all. Hope that helps some at least!

I use the Fuzzi Bunz hanging diaper pail that hangs from a door handle. I bought it through Nicki's Diapers. Here is the link if you are interested: http://nickisdiapers.com/catalog.php?category=105
I don't rinse my diapers and even with poopy diapers this bag really contains the smell. If there are a bunch of poopy diapers and I go 3 or 4 days between washing you can smell them a bit but definitely not overpowering. I hang the bag in my laundry room and I have never smelled anything outside of the room.
Hope this helps :)

I cloth diaper and use two diaper genies. I do a dry pail, so just a little baking soda, but I never have an issue with odor until I take them out to wash. I just wash immediately. I use Bummis, proraps, CPF, and Fuzzi Bunz.

I wash all inserts, CPFs, and Fuzzi Bunz together. Covers I wash with regular laundry. I just rinse them off after they have been used enough and need to be washed. The sun is also great for bleaching and odor control if they are smelling after you wash them. You can also add vinegar to a rinse cycle for odor control. Overall baking soda is awesome and does not damage them.

Hope this helps.

Hi B.,

I haven't done cloth diapers, because I'm a full-time working single mom. However, my mom has talked about her cloth diaper days. She told me that she had a sealed container of some kind, in the bathroom. And in that she would put her detergent, bleach and water. When she had a dirty diaper she would rinse it in the toilet and then add it to the water. When the container was full she would dump the entire container in the washer and start the machine.
I hope that helps,
TRUDI

I used cloth diaper for most of my kids.(5 out of 6) I always stored them in a covered container. I would rinse them in hot water first, then wash them with bleach and double rinse them. I never washed them with other clothing and don't use fabric softener it makes them less absorbent.

If you want to keep your house smelling good try candles up high where the kids can reach them. Also, try a car deordorizer in the diaper pail. The pail I had had a place to store it. Hopefully this will help with the smell.
Good Luck
