We have both DirecTV and AT&T DSL internet. You must have a land line for these.
I'm moving to Rockwall and want to get DirecTV installed. I have decided not to get telephone service in my new home right now and just use my cell to place and receive calls. However, my mother says, "Don't you have to have phone service in order to get cable or internet connected?" I wouldn't think so, but then it got me wondering. Do any of you know? Can I get DirecTV and AT&T Yahoo internet without having telephone service?
Thanks, guys. I spoke with a rep for DirecTV yesterday who indicated that I do not have to run cable through my land line...it is an option. I also found out that AT&T Yahoo is only available to AT&T customers, but you don't have to have home service...you can just have AT&T wireless service and still get the internet. Sounds good. I'm trying to save money any way I can and I just can't justify paying for 2 phone services when all I need is one...at least for right now.

I believe you will need a land line.
You don't need a land line for Time Warner Cable and Internet. You do need it for any Satellite service (including DirecTV) or Fiber Optic service such as FiOS. I had TWV for years without a land line. I really only got a land line in case of emergencies now we have children.
We tried to avoid a LAN line too. We had to have one for the DSL. Another note, Dish Network (maybe DirecTV too) charges $5.00 a month when you do not have the receiver connected to a phone line.
I second the Time Warner Cable. If it's simply cable internet and television... then you don't need a landline. If it's sattelite.. then you do. We have TWC and use our cell phones, it saves us $.
Good Luck!
Living in Rockwall is expensive to have a land line because of "metro" area calling. What I have done in the past is used my mobile phone for calling in and out, charter cable for internet service and Direct TV for television. This was the most economical combination for us.
Cathy,
You do need a telephone line for DSL, but DSL is $19.00/month and my phone is only $10.00 so that is less than TWC wants. For my phone I ONLY have local calling. No caller ID, no long distance, no call waiting.
One word of warning DO NOT do AT&T's U-Verse. We tried it and it was a nightmare!
