Strep, and the Flu Shot for a Toddler: Safe?

My son's father had our three year old get his flu shot on the same day he was told he has strep. At that time he didn't have a fever but was noticeably sick. This was Friday. Tonight (Saturday) he has developed a fever and is red in the face. My question is, is it safe to have given him the flu shot while having strep and giving him a new antibiotic (Cephalexin) that he's never had on top of it?

What can I do next?

What? That makes no sense. They always ask how you are feeling and if you are ill, and if you are, they won't give you the shot.

I have no idea of the safety of it, but it makes no sense.

This is a question for the pediatrician, not for us. Most good pediatricians have 24-hour answering services and the doctor on call (or a "nurse's triage line") will answer urgent questions. Since your child is turning red, I would call that number even if it's night and ask this question immediately.

Your child could be allergic to the antibiotic -- that alone, with no ill effects from the flu shot, could be a problem. Ensure that you know the signs of an allergy to medication (which can include swollen throat, swollen limbs and joints, rashes, redness, difficulty breathing, etc.). But call the doctor to ask about that. Do not wait for replies here!!

Ditto Leigh....

NOT a question for this forum. This is a question for your pedi. Call your pedi NOW and get answers from the on call DR.

I hope you got ahold of a dr on call to help and i hope your little one feels better soon.

Personally I don't think they should have....but I'm not at all surprised they did. Because 'the flu shot is entirely safe and has no side effects'....NOT. I'm so sorry they allowed it.

My pediatrician will not administer any shots when a child is already seriously ill (as in anything more than a runny nose). I think you need to call your on-call nurse or doctor if he is getting worse even though he is on antibiotics...
Good luck

They shouldn't have allowed the flu shot. You should call your doctor ASAP.

your son's father is an idiot.
your son is probably fine, but keep a close eye on him. if he gets sicker quickly you'll have to take him to urgent care. hopefully he'll be okay until monday morning when you can call your doctor.

Thankfully my son is fine. He still has a fever. Called the doctor's last night just to be safe. He received the shot from a doctor's office where his father lives in Pittsburgh. I'm still very upset about the entire thing, and to add insult to injury, now my oldest son is sick with a stomach bug and I think I'm getting it too.
