Tough choice. I had both and didn't really care for either. Side by side is usually too wide to fit between displays in stores and busy traffic areas so tandem is best of two evils. When my husband or a friend goes along I now take two single strollers to avoid the fight about who gets the front. Good Luck.

My vote is for tandem. I have one made my Eddie Bauer and I love it! It is easier to move around, especially in tight space while shopping or even just walking on the side walk. I highly recommend it.

We actually have both a tandem and a side-by-side jogging stroller, and they both have advantages, depending on where we use them. The jogging stroller is nice to take for walks outside on uneven sidewalks and rough terrain, as the wheels are larger and give a smoother ride. But the tandem stroller folds up and fits in my car trunk (though with little extra room) and is nice to take to the mall or other indoor excursions.

Our side-by-side stroller is too wide to go through some doorways, so that is a disadvantage.

Hope that helps.

I have twin boys and purchased both a tandem and a side by side. I always used the tandem stroller. The side by side is too wide for shopping and makes it hard to get around if there are a lot of people. We also found the side by side didn't get through a lot of door ways.

Hi L.,
I am a mom of twin boys... now 6 yrs old.

I believe you will find that having both...if not right away - eventually will be valuable.

In the beginning-- I would start out w/ a Tandom Stroller. Get one you can hook the car seats into so that you can be mobile without waking sleeping babies. We used the Graco tandom w/ car seats. There may be others out there now, but this did well for us. It is not the easiest to push around as compared to a jog stroller, but it works best when out shopping ( going through isles). You can place objects underneath if you need to go the grocery store for a few items with babies in tow.

Then... as they get a little older, you will be know what kind of side by side stroller will suite you best. They are lighter and easier to get in and out of the car.... but they have limitations too....

Hope this helps!

I have used both and I preferthe tandem because most of them can haul 2 carriers and they will fit through any door. The side by side ones don't always fit through doors and its hard getting through crowds with a wider stroller. Also when the kids get a little older and they can sit next to eachother they tend to pull hair and grab eachother. My kids are usually pretty well behaved but sometimes the grumpies get the best of them!! Hope this helped and good luck with the babies!! Consignment stores are great for getting good prices on strollers and the such.

I love our two-seater stroller that is one in front of the other. I don't have twins, but I have 4 kiddos, and it has been a real necessity. Ours was purchased for us in 2006 and it folds up and out easily. And it fits through doorways. Something my side by side stroller made difficult. I would not recommend the side by side umbrella type we have had in the past for the babies when they are infants. It is better when they can support themselves a bit more. Either way, don't get one unless it it compatible with the infant car seats. That is great for transerring babies from house to car to stroller and back w/o waking them! Whatever you decide, good luck, and God Bless! : ) K.

I have twins and we use the Graco DuoGlider stroller. It is one of the only ones that I researched that can actually hold two infant carseats (a MUST with twins!). There is one other that I found that holds two, but it was very expensive. So definitely if she can find a DuoGlider, then that is my top recommendation. I got mine on CraigsList for $100, from a woman who had only used it three times to take her kids to the zoo. And then I found the exact matching carseats (also on CL) for $50 each and both were brand new. So I got my whole set for $200 brand new (or close enough). So if she doesn't mind second-hand stuff, then have her try CL.

Hi! I have twins and a 2 year old, so it was hard for me to find a stroller to fit all of them. I tried a tandem made by Joovy, and it was awful!!!!!! Steering was terrible, and it was hard to get around with. Then, i found VALCO BABY! I LOVE this stroller, it's a side by side, but it fits through all single doorways, and it folds very compact. I couldn't say enough great things about it! It is made to fit twins, but then you can also buy a toddler seat to go in front which is great if your sister in law expects to have anymore after the twins. The stroller pushes very easily and smoothly, it's got great features! I would not buy any other side by side...it's very worth what you will pay for it! (oh, it's hard to find at stores, so you can shop www.valcobaby.com and find it there.) Good luck!

We have 5 month old twins and love our tandem stroller. Anything wider is hard to get around when you have to go shopping. Ours also maneuvers very will. The other isse is that with side by sides you have to be careful to not get one that is too large to fit through doorways.

I absolutely love my Mountain Buggy double stroller (side by side). It is so easy to push and I have not had any problems getting through even small doors with it. We live on a lake and I can take it for walks around it without worrying about getting stuck or popping the tires. It also has really great storage which was an issue I was having with the other two strollers I tried (Peg Pergo and Combi). It also has a great look to it and we get compliments all of the time. There are two bad things about the stroller: is that it is a bit pricey (they start around $700) and my two year old seems a bit cramped in it. I got a side by side one because I wanted our kids to be able to interact and I also feel that I can keep a better eye on both of them. Good luck!

We love our Combi. We had a tandem and it was so hard to steer. I hated it. I couldn't get through doors without help because it was too long to reach both easily. We have the side by side now and it's great. I can take it everywhere, including bathroom stalls (handicapped). The only places it doesn't fit through doors are old buildings that are not up to code. It even does revolving doors. Its seems comfortable for both infants and toddlers. Our model does not have cup holders and it only takes one infant seat, but we never had a problem with an infant seat not being safe on the other side. I'm sure they have models for twins that take two infant seats and would have cup holders. We were going for cheap and couldn't find any used. Congratulations on the twins! It'll be fun!

There are perks to both kinds. I have twins that are two and I have one of each( a tandem and a side by side.) The nice thing about the side by side is that both babies can lay down and you can see both of them at the same time. The downside is that it is wider (it will still fit through normal doorways.) and it doesn't fold very small. Usually just in half depending on the stroller. With a side by side there isn't any screaming either because one kid is in the back and can't see. (My hubby prefers the side by side.)
The tandem is skinner. Its easier to navigate through smaller aisleways but only one kid can lay down. The one in the back and its a LOT longer making navigation a little tougher. There isn't a whole lot of irritating questions with the tandem though because most people will only see one baby. With twins you do get ALOT of irritating questions and people that will stop and ask things that are NONE of their business.
My personal favorite is the side by side but it depends on what your going to use it for. Hope this helps.

L.-I have 3 month old twins and to be honest the best stroller to begin with for the first 3months plus is the double snap n go. It's just a very simple metal frame that allows you to snap the infant seats in. Very light weight and inexpensive. By 3 months she should have a better sense as to what she wants next. That might be a good time to invest in something more durable and expensive, but I would wait until that point to make a very big investment.

I have 16 month old twins, we purchased the clip and go first and loved it! it is a tandum stroller (frame) it holds the car seats and the twins face you! The down side is it is long, so it didn't fit in our sedan. However it was the most convenient for the first 6 months. We also had to purchase a real stroller (to use in the sedan) and we got the combi from babies r us. It is light weight and folds down and inhalf, it is a side by side, but it is also narrower than most models. It works for most stores and it is also easier for me to keep the much adoring strangers from attempting to touch my kids when I don't want them to (no kid is left up front) both of seats allow for them to lay down and it moves around easily, not to mention it was priced very reasonably and my 4 year old nephew jumps in it from time to time without a problem, so it can grow with the kdis without breaking the bank!

Hi L.,

I have twins that are 3 years old and really like the side by side strollers. We had a tandem one but it didn't fit in my sedan and the kid's grandma's couldn't use it because it was too hard to get out of the car and to push. I've been using side by sides since the kids were about 3 months old and haven't had any problems with them. I have a Jeep umbrella stroller model (which I still use a lot) and a BOB running stroller that is great for walking and running. Good luck to your sister in law!

Stroller advice...I would go with tandem unless you can find a side by side one that folds down better than the one we have. I LOVED the double stroller (two little girls, although not twins)but it is bulky and only folds in half top to bottom, so it is very difficult to load up and take anywhere.
Just my two cents worth!
Good luck.

I have a side by side, and although it fits through most doorways, it is a little hard to maneuver in stores. If I had to do it over again, I would probably go with a tandem.

I'd say tandem. Side by side can be awkward to get through some doors and when they are very little they aren't as secure. They are however alot easier to push. You may check into some side by sides that may hold the car seat from when they are very small. Tandems will hold the car seat. But from my experience many are difficult to push! I have a JEEP one.

It all depends on your sister in laws lifestyle. I ended up purchasing both. The tandem is great for stores, malls, etc. Some doorways and aisles don't accomodate for the side by side. The side by side is great for outdoor stuff like the zoo and walking so both babies get a front seat view. Our side by side is a jogging stroller, which has great tires for down by the water on the sand and dirt.

The kind of stroller that you use depends on your lifestyle. I don't have twins, but I have two boys 13 months apart. I went through both a tandem and a side by side. The tandem I got first when boy #2 was an infant because I could attatch the infant car seat to it, I love many things about this stroller. When the boys were older I got a side by side and never really liked it. It was easy to push, but I could never get through the doorways on the first try and one kid could get his fingers pinched if he is reaching out to grab at something. (the stroller is a tight squeeze in the doorway. I went back to the tandem after a few trips with the side by side. With stadium seating they both get a good view, both seats recline, and the storage basket is bigger! I would go to a Babys R us and test some of both aroung the store to get a preference to what you really like, and also try folding them at the store to make sure that it is easy to do! Good luck and Congrats on the twins!

I have 2 small children close together in age and swear by the Bob Duallie stroller. the front wheel rotates or can be locked into place. Because my son is still in the bucket seat, we have a carseat "adapter". My daughter sits normally in the stroller and my son in his bucket seat. The stroller is pricey but worth it.

Hi L., I have found that the side by sides are easier to manover and they do fit through door ways easily the only problem I have had is when you go to a department store in the mall and they set all the stuff in the isle they dont allow room for more then a single stroler sometimes which is against fire code. Anyway I can't remember the type I got but I absoulty love it. I got it at Babies R Us its the teal and gray one. But they them out at Babies R Us and see what you think. I hope this helps J.
