I'm wanting to get my 4 yr old an MP3 player for her birthday. I bought the Discover Kids MP3 about a year ago and was saving it for her birthday---bad move on my part....I just tried to load songs on it and it doesn't work.
I was looking at the Fisher Price Kid Tough MP3 player....very cute, looks adorable and comes with a microphone and speakers (she doesn't like head phones or earbuds)....but this is just too expensive....$100 is the cheapest I can find.
Any recommendations on an affordable unit w/ speakers and possibly a microphone?

What can I do next?

Whatever you decide on...use a label maker and put your phone number on it and stick it to electronics. Children seem to leave them in restaurants or lose them...maybe if this happens someone honest might find it.

We got this one for my 4 year old for christmas. She loves it and it's super easy to put songs on it that she wants. And the price was right. :)

iPhone 3gs

1 penny right now.

2 year contract needed, but you just suspend the phone service or have it set at the lowest level (about $10 per month). Total parental controls mean you can block everything (no buttons) except for the music and camera (and any other aps you might want to keep). The buttons don't even show up.

And... being an iPhone... it works with everything.

Also... being an iPhone... you can activate the GPS tracking and keep it on her when she's out and about (school, sitters, playdates, etc.). Kidnapping almost never happens, but it's a great, if it DID very few people expect a kid under 10 to have a gps tracker (phone) on them.

We boought both of our girls Sansa shakers (they are 5 and 2). You can use headphones with it, but it has a speaker built in. I think they might have gone to a new model now, though, but you might just check amazon for "sandisk mp3 with speakers" - (the sansa is by sandisk) - we've been happy with them. Durable, and kid-friendly. No microphone, though, but we just wanted it so that the kids could listen to their music without driving us all crazy. I wanted to buy them cd players, but my husband pointed out that most of their music in the future will probably be digital anyway, so we might as well start them that way.

It's a far cry from the 45's that I started out with, huh?

Hey -
I bought the Fisher Price Kid Tough one years ago for my son - when they were less than $100.00 and I really hated it. However, at some point along the way, I bought an Ipod for myself that both of my kids (8 and 4) use regularly and love. Therefore, I bought a 2nd one, used, on ebay for less than $50.00 from a user/store called Nextworth. It's been GREAT. Now we have a spare one around and I bought a couple of "tv shows" for it that the kids love (dora, angelina ballerina, and transformers....spent maybe $10.00 on shows that stay on it all the time). And, we buy the Kid's Bop cds as they come out and I load them onto the ipod. My kids love it - graphics are fabulous for the video part. Personally, I really like the ipod because it uses the same software (itunes) as my phone. I took my son on vacation earlier this year and actually put a digital version of a movie on the ipod so that he had one movie on it.

Good luck,
L.

my kiddo has an ipod shuffle - the clip kind. I found at a garage sale for $20 and uploaded all his kids bop and veggie tales.
We just plug into computer for speakers when needed.
