It is the Summertime and I am always putting sunblock on my daughter. After I wash her clothes they come out with a orangish stain around the arms, neck, and anywhere she or I may have touched with sunblock hands. I have tried stain removed and it is no help. Any suggestions on preventing or getting these stains out would be greatly appreciated. Also I do have well water and have a feeling this may also be contributing to these terrible stains

What can I do next?

I would suggest switching sunblock. Who needs more laundry hassles!?! Arbonne makes a great ABC Sunscreen for children. If you are interested, I would be happy to send samples to you as I am a consultant. Arbonne's products are pure, safe & beneficial botanically based products formulated in Switzerland. I have used Arbonne's sunscreens on my family for the last 8 years - no sunburns, no stained clothing nd no feeling greasy or smelling like a coconut!! All good stuff. Good luck with your current clothing issues.

Hi M.:
I have to tell you, I have two daughters, 3 dogs, a cat, and a bird! With all of that, you can imagine how much cleaning I have to do. A little over a year ago, I found this wholesale store that sells cleaning, laundry, etc., anyway I switched stores. Last summer my youngest one and I were cleaning our boat to take them tubing. She was wearing a pink t-shirt! After we were done you can imagine how it may have looked. Between the laundry soap, and the prespot I got, it came back totally clean! I was so amazed, it's just awewsome stuff. If you would like to know more just send an email to me. Thanks, K.

I have the same issue, I wish I knew what specific ingredient did it, so I could avoid those brands. Currently I am using the "noad" brand it is in a huge orange bottle.
I tried the coppertone baby spray, it turned everything orange FYI.
If I can I try to get her necked or down to her underware, then apply, works good for the first trip out for the day but for reapplies not so good ;)
Good luck!

Try a product called "Lestoil" to get the stains out. It's at Meijer or some larger chain grocery stores, in the aisle with cleaning supplies and laundry detergent. It works on all kinds of stuff. Just apply the Lestoil directly to the stain, rub it in, and let it sit for at least 20 minutes before laundering. You may want to rinse the items one extra time before drying. I hope you haven't dried the stains into the clothes, it may make the stain removal harder.

Hope this helps!

Hi M.,
I wonder if it might be the type of sunblock you use that may be causing the stains? We used to use a sunscreen that caused the orange stains but then switched to a different brand and now we have no more stains. I know sunscreen can be costly but it might be worth a try! We have been using Neutrogena brand spray this season and we have no clothing stains. Best of luck!

Hi M.:

I have used Shout Advanced on our clothes since I have the same problem and I keep the stain remover on the clothes up to a week until the stain is completly gone before I re-wash the items. This process takes a while, but it does enventually remove the stain. I hope this helps. If you find any other ideas that might be helpful to me, let me know.
Thanks,
A.

M.,

It sounds like the sunscreen you are using is causing the stains. An option would be to lube her up in clothes you don't mind getting icky and then 15 minutes later, after the sunscreen has dried, put her into her "going out" clothes.

I just switched to Burt's Bees sunscreen, and even though it is expensive it doesn't have the petroleum based chemicals that can cause health problems later on. We did not see any staining with this product, so it might be something to consider. It is more of a hassel because it is a cream rather than a spray, but I feel more comfortable putting something on my son that has natural chemicals rather than man-made chemicals.

A final thought, children and adults need a certain amount of vitamin D every day. Our bodies naturally make this chemical when our skin is exposed to the sun. You might want to think about leaving the sunscreen off for the morning and then putting it on her in the afternoon, during the most dangerous part of the day.

Good luck!

I have been using all-natural sunscreens on my daughter and don't end up with this problem. Also, for stain removal, I use a product called Oxo-Bright (similar to Oxi-Clean - I buy it at Trader Joes). I wash her clothes in hot and then when the water fills up, turn off the washer and let everything soak over night. But be sure to avoid adding clothing that you think may be prone to "bleed" or "run". I accidentally put in a pair of her dark colored jeans once when doing this and everything turned a shade of blue... Luckily I was able to get the stains out by repeating the process - this time without the jeans! It's gotten out some pretty nasty stains.

It may be the sunblock you are using. I was using a sunblock that was made for babies and it took the paint off someof their toys. I now use Arbonne Baby sunscreen. It is botanical and safe. I can mail you a sample if youare interested. Just send me your name and address.

Take Care,
T.

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but I saw yesterday on Martha Stewart that for oil based stains if you pre-treat with corn starch, by gently rubbing some in with a popsicle stick and leaving a layer on it to set for about 15-20 minutes it will lift the oil out, then use your usual pre-treater and wash. It also works with baby oil, cooking oil, etc. The lady who wrote in about it was from Michigan, go figure!
