Is it safe to use sunless tanning creams/gels when nursing? I could use some spring color but I don't want to tan--too dangerous.

What can I do next?

Hi C.,

Arbonne make a great sunless tanner than actually smells like sunblock (not that gross vinegary smell!) - has SPF 15 and re9 anti-aging ingredients in it too! It is 100% pure, SAFE & beneficial - meaning they only use 100% botanically (plant) based ingredients. Please check out:

I would be very cautious if I were you. As far as I know there have been no studies into the safety of sunless tanning and nursing. Did you know that the skin is the largest organ in respiration? Its powers of absorbtion are astounding. You rub an onion on your skin and you can smell it on your breath 1/2 hour later. Creams with vitamins have been used on soldiers too injured to ingest food and the body absorbs them. So that means it also absorbs all the dangerous or questionable ingrediants that are used in cosmetics. I would be very careful putting any chemical on your skin, especially products that contain parabens and benzoate derivitives.

Hi C.,

I nursed all three of my children and the Doctor had even said I could take certain medications when I had become ill. I am a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant and everyone knows our products are tested for safety first. Our products are hypo-allergenic and water is the first ingredient, which is depleted when you nurse(that's why you get thirsty). We have a sunless tanning lotion which is safe for all. Just go to my web-site www.marykay.com/gdominicci and call me with any questions. I will send it to you, free delivery and 100% money back guarantee. Hope this will help and God bless you and your new baby.

There is a really safe tanning lotion by Arbonne. They are "pure, safe and beneficial" products that are botanically based and not totally full of harmful chemicals. However, I would seriously recommend speaking with your doctor before use anyway. The lotions can be purchased at www.ForTheCause. net

Check ALL the ingredients on the Skin Deep section on www.ewg.org and then make your decision. The sun in small quantities has many health benefits. I suggest Light, Medicine of the Future as the book to read about this topic if it interests you.

"Sun is bad" is a myth! Most people are so depleted of essential fatty acids though that they easily burn. This is not the fault of the sun. We NEED sunlight for health and without sunscreen which is really toxic. I use a safe sunscreen (from www.goodskinforlife.com) for those occasions when I am out for a long period of time.

the active ingredient in self tanners dha doesnt penetrate into the bloodstream, just the outer layer of skin that is why it fades away as the layers of skin slough off. I was desperate to use it while pregnant and pasy white in the summer and know people that have used it and had not problem, however i did not due to lack of study. but the real truth is there is no definitive study so to play it safe maybe use a bronzer and sally hansen made a leg makeup that can give you a glow used on arms too and waterproof.. if doing the nursing and choose to self tan, avoid the area that the baby's mouth
touches. Idid use on my face and it cant be worse that the lotions, potions, make up and stuff we use on a daily basis that dont even consider. AH if the glow from motherhood wasnt enough tell it to my legs in shorts! good luck!

Hi C.,

I think it's safe as long as your not doing it right before you nurse your baby. Or you can just skip that area all together and then you won't have anything to worry about.
