Surgery - Queen Creek, AZ

I was told that my 3 1/2 year old daughter needs to have surgery to seal up an abdominal hernia (not an umbilical hernia which she had, but went away...this one is above that--she actually has 2 right there). Of course I am VERY nervous about this since they will have to put her under general anesthesia and I was told I am not allowed to go back with her. Has anyone else been through this? How was your experience? Anything I should do to help prepare for it? What about after the surgery?

What can I do next?

My daughther also had an abdominal hernia and had to have surgery. She was younger than your daughter, only 13 months at the time of surgery.
I was worried sick about the anesthesia and how she would tolerate coming out of it.
She did amazing, from the time they took her away, until she stared to come out of it was about 35 min., she was sleepy but that was all. We took her home and she rested for a couple hours, and then was up and around as if nothing had happened- running and dancing that same night.
The hardest part was waiting and worring beforehand.
The one thing I would suggest is that you have the surgery done the very first thing in the morning, as they are not allowed to eat or drink anything for a while before the procedure.
Good luck, it will be harder on you than on her.

my son had surgery for the same thing at the same hospital and i was nervous too...mUch more nervous than he was...he could have cared less.

They were very good with my husband and i. the hardest part was handing him to the nurse (who was a stranger of course) to go back to the O.R. He cried a bit and it broke my heart. They start their IV after they are under anestesia so they dont feel it. THen it comes out soon after, while they are still groggy. As soon as they wake up from anesthesia you are allowed in the recovery room and can go in and hold then while they finish waking up. THis is the best moment ever!! Once they drink something and are stable you get to take them home. They are groogy for a while and will just hang out on the couch for a few hours and then will want to resume normal activities that toddlers love. THe hardest part is keeping them less active for a while!! buy some new coloring books, stickers, watercolors, and books for the few days after surgery!!

Good luck...all will be fine. Know that you are more nervous than them and kids are extremely resilant!
