My 5 month old has to have surgery for two abcesses. He has to be put under during the surgery and I'm wondering if anyone else has gone through it. I'm a little worried because he's so little.

What can I do next?

S., my daughter was very ill and had multiple sugeries, tests, etc. and had to be put under several times....the first time she was 3 months old and had to be put into a drug-induced coma for 6 weeks. You would not believe how resilient these little babies are! I saw babies in the PICU that had open heart surgery as soon as they were born! I can tell you from experience, however, that you need to keep an eye on his body temperature after the surgery....little ones tend to get cold due to the medicine. Just keep him warmed up, OK?

My son had to be put under at 7 months old for tubes and everything was totally fine. His ENT explained because he was so young that they had to perform the surgery at the hospital so they would be prepared in case anything went wrong. Which, of course, thankfully everything went smoothly. My friend's baby was born with a rare heart defect and has had multiple open heart surgeries (as well as several other minor surgeries) starting right after he was born...he will be three this month. Although it is very scary for your child to go through this, you just have to trust your doctors and know that they are experienced and prepared for everything.

my son now 3 years had surgery for pyloricstenosis just b4 he turned 4 weeks. He is just fine. Things can happen, just be informed, ask questions, get to know the staff & the doctor. do not be intimidated by their positions (your position as mama is much higher) ask those questions until you understand everything. Your child will sense your nervousness b4 and after the procedure, so be calm. (i cryed like a baby:) i will pray for you and your child.

My grandson had I&D surgery to drain 2 abscesses when he was only 6 wks old. It is a pretty simple surgery. Putting him under is actually scarier than the surgery itself. Anesthesia always has some risk, but at that age, the kid cannot be relied on to hold perfectly still during a surgery with a local, so does need to be put under. The dose of anesthesia is calculated by weight, so the smaller the child, the smaller the dose, that much is in his favor!

My second child was a week old when he had surgery for being tongue tied. He could not suck on anything and therefore couldn't nurse, drink from a bottle, etc. and had to have the surgery. We just put him in the Lord's Hands, which was the hardest thing to do and he came out of the surgery fine and sucking like crazy!! Couldn't get him to stop eating! LOL!

My sister's daughter was born at 23 weeks. She had to have multiple surgeries involving her heart and intestines. She was put to sleep multiple times when she was only 2 to 3 pounds. Those doctors for the little ones are excellent!!

Prayers for your son during his surgery!!

Trust me, they do better during the surgeries than we do while they are in...LOL.
My son had surgery immediately after he was born (7.5 weeks early so he could have the surgery), another at one week, another at 4 weeks, another at 8 weeks, and two others since he was home from the hospital.
He will be 11 in February and is perfectly healthy and rotten.

Keys to you surviving the surgery "wait" is to be busy. Find something that you can do that can keep your mind off of the clock. Reading, puzzle books, bring some family or friends...

I am sure you will both do wonderful. : )

My daughter wasn't as young as your child when she had her surgery (14 months), but I was nervous wreck before the surgery. But surprisingly, on the day of the surgery, I was more calm than I had been leading up to the surgery. The staff at the surgery center explained everything, and I felt comfortable with them putting her under anesthesia because they had checked her out well, and they gave us regular updates. And everything went really well. They should explain the stages children go through when they get anesthesia as well.

My little boy had to have a cyst removed when he was 5 months old. I was really nervous about the whole thing, but it went really well. He could not eat anything after midnight the night before the surgery, and I was so worried that he would cry all night/morning, but he didn't. I was also worried about the iv, but they actually gave him gas to put him to sleep before they gave him the iv so that he would not be upset. Everything went wonderful and I am sure that it will all go well for you too.

My twins both went through surgeries at 5 months and on the same day. They actually did really well considering they had to be put under as well. The doctors told me the younger they are, the better they bounce back and it was true.

I have four boys, however one of my twins who are now 9 when he was six months old he had to have surgery. He had hernia in the groin area and they said it had to be removed or he would had problems developing in that area. He had another one on his stomach but evidently that one his skin would stretch out. Anyway i was very scared to have them put him under but he came through it just fine. He did not seem any different, they let me carry him in the operating room and put him down on the table and i did not leave untill they had given him the anesthesia and he was asleep and then when he was done, they called me and when he woke up mommy was there. So he knew something was different but he didn't know i was gone through the surgery, i liked that part. Anyway he is 8 years old now fixing to turn 9 this month and he is doing great. However, i do completely understand your hesistation and nervousness, i was so scared and had so many ideas of what would happen. I don't really know that much about abscesses so i hope this info helped. The only thing i do know is how it feels for a 6 month old child going under the knife and being put to sleep makes you feel. I am sure everything will go well. Please let us know how he is doing.

My grandbaby weighed 3# when she was born. She had a lot of problems and had to have surgery when she was two weeks old. Just trust your doctors. I, of course, was a nervous wreck...but I knew she needed the operation. She will be two in January and is as healthy as an ox now! You would NEVER know she was so small when she was born OR ever guess what all she went through for the first year and a half of her life. I will pray for you and your son!
