I am expecting my baby boy in a couple of months and had a question about swaddling. Is it best to use receiving blankets to swaddle or an actual swaddling blanket?

if you swaddle right, you don't need special swaddle blankets, but they can make doing it easier! However, the special swaddle blankets also are often too thick and warm for this region and type of year, so be aware of that when buying!

For best iformation, watch "The happiest baby on the block" by Dr. Harvy Karp" DVD (you can rent, borrow or buy on line or locally) and watch the question and anser part as well as the "show" to to get the technique down and to learn that swaddling is only the first step in a happy baby!

Best of luck!

Hi S.,

The larger receiving blankets work fine at first, however if you are going to swaddle for a while(which I HIGHLY Recommend) I loved, loved, loved the Miracle Blanket! This blanket is basically swaddling for dummies...in addition it keeps baby tucked in nice an snug & happy. I cannot say enough about it and the book the happiest baby on the block has great tips for soothing a little one. You can get them at the nesting place if you want to look at them first hand, or you can order them online ....just google miracle blanket. I think the website is actually www.miracleblanket.com

Congratulations and best wishes to you and your new family!

We swaddled all 4 in receiving blankets. I've honestly never heard of any of these other types of blankets! If you do choose receiving blankets, don't buy the 30x30 square kind - too small. I don't know the dimensions off the top of my head, but I think Carters blankets are the only ones that are rectangular, and because they're not as abundant, they're a little more expensive but worth it. Congratulations and good luck!!

I also used the swaddle-me blankets. They have them at Babies R Us -- I also bought Dr. Karp's "happiest baby on the block" book there, which was really helpful. I have given a blanket & the book to every new mom that I know - it worked miracles for us.

I used the Swaddle Me blanket with my daughter and it worked great! I not buy it for all the baby showers I go to! Good Luck and Congradulations on your new son.

The miracle blanket is awesome, I saw you bought one. When your little boy gets bigger I would visit www.beyondbabybasics.com they have a larger swaddling blanket that works wonders. My daughter was swaddled until she was 7-8 months old, that was the only way I could get her to sleep. She out grew the little blankets so we had to move up to the ones from baby basics, they saved my life.

I agree that the blankets are good for the first couple of months then as they get older you may want to move to a "swaddler". My daughter slept swaddled until she was 7 months old. I HIGHLY recommend swaddling...it brought such comfort to our daughter and to us. I used the popular swaddler at Babies R Us (can't remember the name) and it worked well, but she kicked out of the bottom as she got older. I didn't hear about the miracle blanket until after she was done with swaddling but I hear it's great. Good luck!

Congratulations on your baby boy! I just wanted to put in a word about swaddling. While I've heard that most babies like to be swaddled, neither of mine cared for it. I will always rememder that long night of my DD crying at 7 days old. We were swaddling just like everyone said to. She was fed and dry and we were at our wits end.

My DH, took her and decided to lay her on his chest skin-to-skin. When he unwrapped he we discovered that she was burning up. We took off all the swaddling and all her clothes but the diap. Tada, happy baby! To this day (she's now 4.5) she runs hot.

My 9-month olf son doesn't care for it either. He's a mover.

Our daughter loves to be swaddled, but rather tightly. We prefer to use blankets that are made of waffle weave material. They are extra stretchy, and stay tight longer, no matter how much she wiggles around. I tried to put her in a swaddling blanket, but she was not very patient with me.

I wouldn't waste my money on an actual miracle blanket! You can make one yourself. I used to wrap my boys up the same way with a BIG recieving blanket and folded up recieving blanket underneath them for their arms. I suggest going to the miracle blanket website, and you can see how to do it without having to spend the money, they grow out of them so fast!

Oops, you already bought one, sorry should have looked at the tell us what happened. They really do work great, but they're so expensive. Good luck with your bundle of joy!

You have to get the Miracle Blanket from Burdick Baby/ The Nesting Place in Grapevine. The blanket is amazing! It makes the swaddle easy and it doesn't come undone easily! That blanket saved our lives with my first and I have already purchased a new one for our second!

Since my son (whos now almost 5) was so tiny (only 5 lbs 15 oz), I used receiving blankets for swaddling most of the time. They seemed the easiest to me.

I second the waffle weave recommendation. I really liked the thermal blankets by koala baby for swaddling. The extra stretch really helped, and they worked as the baby got larger.

Congrats! I love the waffle weave for the 1st mos. The miracle blanket- Burdick Baby- is good for the 2-3rd mos. You can swaddle the body and tuck the legs in a pouch. If the baby is sleeping- you can undo the leg pouch and buckle him in the car seat w/out undoing the swaddle.

S.,
lots of advice here and all of it good. Swaddling is really necessary for the first 3 months at least for many much longer. I usually recommend at my class either a thermal, swaddle by design, or my preference of course is The Miracle Blanket. I say of course because it is the coolest, most versatile and easiest to use. I would like to clear up a misconception. Burdick Baby has not been at the Nesting Place for a few years, however we still carry the Miracle Blanket and will do demonstrations for you on the best way to use it with either your baby, ours or a doll.
Visit us at the Nestingplace in Grapevine. We also offer Dr Karps "Happiest Baby on the Block" class here every month. It can be a real life saver.
Good Luck,
let us know how it worked out for you.

Hi S.,

I always used receiving blankets and they worked great! Plus, you can find some that are not too heavy so your baby boy won't get too hot.
