We took lessons at Henley. They are closed at the moment for repairs, but should be done in time for fall. Just check the website for parks and rec for a schedule.
I have an almost 8 month old who loves the water! I would like to get him enrolled in some swimming lessons and would appreciate any suggestions. We live in the Waldo area. Thank you.

My family just joined the YMCA and we enrolled our son in swim lessons. They start as young as 6 months of age. The charge was less for members but they do accept nonmembers for a slightly higher charge. It was a great experience and will continue next session. I would call ASAP if you are interested, though. I think there is only one more summer session.

I just wanted to tell you my experience in swim lessons. I have 4 children and when my oldest was about 8 months old I was so excited about smiw lessons since he loved the water that I signed him right up. But, I quickly learned that at that age what they were doing I could easily have done on my own with him. I am not trying to burst your excitement...just tell you my experience. I would suggest joining somewhere where they have a pool and taking him swimming yourself. The time we spent together swimming was the best part of the lessons. Encourage him to kick his legs and help him "float on his back". At that age that is what you will be doing at lessons anyways. You have to be in the pool with him.
Maybe there are others whose kids have learned to swim at that young of an age, but with mine they have been between 4 and 5 when they started swimming.
Good luck. C.
Hi A. -
I too have an 8month old who loves the water and I also live in the Waldo area. So far I have taken him to one swimming at the Fitness Plus More center on Roe & 435. They charge $32 for non-members (I think - sleep deprivation plays tricks with my memory!) for four sessions which ran on a Thursday evening at 7:00pm. My son decided to change his sleeping pattern and go to bed a lot earlier so it put an end to those lessons for us.
However, I read that Prairie Village pool has lessons for babies, but I can't remember when, try calling them ###-###-#### as they are pretty close, just off of 79th and Mission.
I hope this is of some help and perhaps I'll see you around the Waldo area some time?

Hi. I am new to this website so I hope I am doing this right. I just read your email and wanted to let you know that Johnson County Parks and Recreation prints a summer guide that has information about a lot of activities in the area- including swimming lessons for babies and children. I don't know if Jackson county does the same, but there may be some Prairie Village pools offering classes that might not be too far of a drive for you. I got my guide from a neighbor who said she picked it up at a Big Lots store. You might try the web for KS or MO parks and recreation. The YMCA may also have classes. Good luck!
