Swollen Gums Due to Teething

My 20 month old son is teething. I have been able to feel 4 teeth wanting to come in, one one every side. Last week I actually saw two white spots on the bottom where the teeth were finally breaking through. Now today I noticed that his poor gums are so swollen that it has covered the teeth back up and you can't see them anymore. He has two huge bumps there instead of teeth. I was wondering if anyone else has seen this and should I be concerned?

You can also give him mortin for the swelling and pain as well.

Hi S.! I agree with just about everything that has been shared and laughed about the frozen sock suggestion but it provides the same relief I used with frozen washcloths! I couldn't ever find a frozen teether long or skinny enough to fit the place that the tooth was coming in once they got to the side and back teeth, so I took the small baby washcloths, wet them, rolled them tightly and then put them on a plate in the freezer. Once they were frozen, I put them in a plastic bag so they wouldn't absorb whatever was in the freezer. They do defrost after about 10 minutes but it gives them a safe way to reach the tooth area without causing a choking hazzard and they are also not frozen so cold that it hurts their hands to hold for a time. Hope this helps. I'm going through it with my 17 month old and it seems like it's going to take forever to get them through completely. Some of my kids teeth seemed to pop through over night and some of them are the slow goers....hang in there, they'll pop out for good in their own time! Take care, M.

no you shouldn't be concerned, they just havent cut the gum yet...give him a frozen sock or toy to chew on...it will limit the pain, held decrease the swelling, and push the gums up...the homeopathic teething tabs do wonders for the pain too...

Savior tip...can only thank the WONDERFUL nurses at the Pedi's office -- cut/tear bagels into small pieces, & place in the freezer (in a ziplock baggie). I'm telling you SAVED my sanity!!

Both of my boys had a hard time with teething. The baby would take 4-5 months to really get the tooth out. They constantly did the in and out thing. The resulting constant line of drool caused a rash that only went away with a layer of steroids. Nothing really speeds up the process. Figure out how to make her comfortable. HG would teeth for weeks - months straight so constantly giving him drugs just wasn't an option for me. Some things that helped.
Hard teethers
Frozen teethers
Drop (just a quick dip of your finger) of rum on the area
and the best thing ever all natural teething tabs. Various Names. You will find them in any grocery store. Dissolve a tablet in a drop of water and rub on the area. Or dissolve one under her tongue.
Keep her skin as dry as possible. If she does get a rash for more than a couple days go see a doctor.
Good luck!
