Talking To, and Playing Music For, Our Babies in the Womb

We have just found out we are having twins, and are so excited!! We are only 8 wks pregnant, and we would love to begin talking to our babies and maybe playing music for them. At what stage of pregnancy would it be okay to start this? We have found a great package at Babies R Us that allows us speakers for my belly, microphones for me and daddy, and music cd's to play as well. Did any of you do this type of thing for your baby, and at what stage of pregnancy did you start? Is there any harm in doing this too early. I don't want to just bombard them w/all kinds of loud sounds that could be harmful to their hearing, etc. Please let me know your experiences with this. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Congratulations! Twins how exciting! I did not use any formal equipment but I played classical music every chance I to and talked all the time! :) Both of my children, 19 months and 4 years old still listen to classical music while they sleep. :)

The babies can begin to react to sounds between 13 and 16 weeks, according to the Dr. Sears website.

I carried a baby for some friends who taped themselves singing, reading and talking to their baby. I played the tapes to the baby every night using a walkman (I put the headphones on my belly). She definitely knew the sound of her parents' voices when she was born! :) I also played music for my own daughters this way.

Congratulations to you and your husband on two blessings! :)

Congratulations. I am also 8 weeks along! You're so lucky to find out you have twins this early on. How did your doctor know, an U/S already? My doc doesn't even want to do my first exam for another two weeks. (We already did the bloodwork and have prenatals for anyone concerned.) Anyway, it doesn't matter how early you start with the music. It won't hurt, but they probably won't hear much yet. I don't know about all you hear about classical music making them smarter and such, but I can certainly vouch for the fact that they do hear and get used to certain sounds in the womb. When I was pregnant with my DS, I spent a lot of time at our kennel, so he was totally used to barking dogs. To this day, he never flinches no matter how much he hears dogs barking at home or there. Also, I had two CDs in particular that I listened to all the time. After he was born, those were the only things that would calm him at night and put him to sleep. They weren't classical though. One was Billy Joel and the other was 80's :) I wonder if I had the only baby soothed by "Uptown Girl?" And I swear he tries to sing along when I have it on in the car now. He doesn't do it to any other music. So definitely make it music that you like also! You may be hearing it a lot more than you bargained for.

Hi K.,

Congratulations on the new pregnancy and TWINS!!

When we were pregnant with my daughter, we didn't buy anything special, just a portable CD player with the headphones. It was much cheaper and they hear the same. I played CD's all the time, especially a lot of the band Chicago. My daughter definitely responded and we talked to her all the time and she recognized our voices.

Good luck!

K.,

Whatever kind of music you choose, make it something soothing for you to be able to play later as well. Let me reassure you that you won't hurt thier ears. The sound of your body from the inside is about as loud as a vacuum cleaner 24/7, so the babies will come out with a need for those white noises and the sounds you put on the tummy are muted next to the existing sounds. Take a look at Dr Karps website, www.thehappiestbabyontheblock.com He has done extensive research and won awards for his findings. Also T Berry Brazelton, Dr Sears and Dr Ferber all support his findings.
Don't forget early pregnancy class to help you know how to take care of yourself thru each trimester. Take a look at www.thenestingplace.net for some classes that may be helpful.

I did not put music diectly on by belly for a good reason. How do you know you are not disrupting their sleep cycle? (unless you are FOR SURE they are awake) but, how many times are you going to say "OK! they are awake now, let me go find my belly phones!" Many parents put the head phones on when it is convenient for themselves, not their babies. This is very bad (in my unprofessional opinion) because it could wake them from a very important sleep cycle.

Why on Earth would anyone want to bombard their child with the noises they can hear the rest of their life and rob them of the peaceful noises they can only hear for 9 months? Infants are the most soothed by the natural sound of mama's belly, which is why many people record thier belly sounds during pregnancy. I would recommend this instead.

anyway, just my opinion. God bless, liz

Congratulations K.!
We played a very soothign classical music CD for our son from the day we found out that we were preganant - Peaceful Mornings. It is wonderful and soothing! To this day, we play the CD in his room every night at bedtime and he is 3! We take our crib CD player with us when we travel because the music relaxes him almost instantly! I think it is so wonderful to start bonding with your babies now! Again, Congratualtions! Keep us posted on your pregnancy!
